Our new bonus episode is out, with special guest Dr Stephanie Russo!! Tess and Hilary have a delightfully good chat with Steph about her new book, which covers about 500 years of Anne Boleyn’s literary afterlife. And we also chat about the Starz series The Spanish Princess and the representation of Henry VIII’s first wife, Katherine of Aragon. This was a great conversation and we hope you enjoy. Make sure you check out our epsiode about Good Lord Bird by James McBride, found wherever you find your podcasts, because tomorrow we have another awesome discussion coming your way with an exciting guest star! You can, of course, listen to all of our past episodes any time online.
We were very happy to recommend that people read this book (and glad that we have had a few we've liked recently!) and the TV show, and our chat is fairly spoiler free, with has lots of great historical context from our resident American history expert, Lachlan! 🕊

Hello! My gosh end of Semester Two and life has really caught up with us, so we have pushed back our episode releases by a week. Doesn’t mean they won’t be great! This month features Lachlan’s first book, The Good Lord Bird, which has also been adapted and is available on Stan to watch. And just at the beginning of December, Hilary will be reading the 1918 set, The Pull of the Stars, all about the Spanish Flu pandemic in Ireland (kind of apt). And we will announce some bonus content in the episode on the 18th. We apologise for the delay, and look forward to discussing these books soon! Until then, happy reading!✨✨✨✨

Continuing the theme, our second book for the spooky October is The Witches of BlackBrook by Tish Thawer! And we have very exciting news - we have a special guest Dr Brydie Kosmia coming to talk all things witches with us! Brydie is a certified expert on witchy pop culture as she has just completeld her PhD on it earlier this year, and is keen to discuss this book, set alternatingly between the late 17th century and modern day and following the story of three Salem sisters. We'll be talking a bit more about the context of witches in the popular imagination and how stories like this and our last book fit into this broader culture. It'll be a fun one!

New episode is in your feeds today! People of the Book, by Geraldine Brooks inspired some interesting discussions from Tess, about what it’s like to recognise a book that had a huge influence on you when you first read it, but may not quite have held up to those memories on a reread. Pictured here is an illumination from the Sarajevo Haggadah, which is the historical text featured throughout the novel. We hope you enjoy, and happy reading! ✨📜✨📜✨📜✨

Our second book for September is People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks, read by Tess. People of the Book follows the story of an Australian book conservation expert as she tries to piece together the history of a mysterious manuscript, the Sarajevo Haggadah. This novel was inspired bt the true stories behind this famous codex and its multiple rescues from the destruction of war and violence. It is a special book for Tess, because it is one of the first real historical fiction novels she remembers reading, so listen in on Wednesday to see how she felt about it now, rereading years later and with much more historical training than she had at age 13! 📜🦋🐚🍷
Until then, happy reading!

This is Hilary sharing a little quote from The Dictionary of Lost Words ahead of our episode on Wednesday. The main protagonist Esme collects ‘lost words’ or words from less formal English, spoken by those in everyday, colloquial language. In the book, Pip Williams explores how gender plays a role in the distinction between formal expressed, which we discuss in the episode, and the quote here is an example of language used by the maid Lizzie. Pictured is a Miss Cicely Stuckey (Copyright Ellis & Walery) and she reminded me of how I imagined Lizzie and I wish I could find out more about her story. Until Wednesday, happy reading! 🌹✨🌹✨🌹

Our first book of September, with an apt spring looking cover, is The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. Set at the turn of the century, it follows Esme and her life around the Scriprorium, an iron shed in Dr James Murray’s garden where the first Oxford English Dictionary was compiled. With a love of words and natural curiosity, Esme begins to her own dictionary of sorts, of lost words and colloquialism that don’t seem to have a place in the formality of the OED. Listen in to our podcast next Wednesday to hear more (mostly spoiler free) about this wonderful book. Until then, happy reading! ✨🌹✨🌹✨🌹✨
