President Hichilema Directs Justice Minister to Defer Bill No. 7 of 2025 for Wider National Consensus

President Hakainde Hichilema has directed the Minister of Justice, Princess Kasune, to defer the controversial Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7 of 2025 to allow for broader national consensus and inclusive dialogue.

The Head of State emphasized the importance of unity, transparency, and collective ownership in the constitutional reform process, urging stakeholders to approach the matter in the spirit of national interest and democracy.

In a statement released by State House this morning, President Hichilema said the deferment is intended to create room for more comprehensive consultations with citizens, civil society, the Church, political players, and other key institutions to ensure the proposed amendments reflect the collective will of the people.

HH Ends National Mourning for Late President Lungu, Urges Return to Normalcy

Lusaka, 19 June 2025 — President Hakainde Hichilema has officially brought to a close the national mourning period for Zambia’s late 6th Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, citing the need for the country to return to normalcy after efforts to accord the former Head of State a dignified state funeral were derailed by the family’s sudden reversal of earlier agreements.

In a nationally televised address, President Hichilema described the past 14 days since Mr. Lungu’s death as a time of reflection, mourning, healing, and a test of Zambia's unity and resolve. He extended gratitude to the church, traditional leaders, citizens, and key dignitaries—among them former Vice President Enock Kavindele and Chief Mumbi—for their support during the period.

President Hichilema also expressed deep appreciation to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa for their support and readiness to facilitate the repatriation of Mr. Lungu’s remains, which was ultimately aborted due to a last-minute change by the Lungu family.

“We were prepared to receive the remains of our former President yesterday, but were surprised by the family’s reversal of the agreed course of action,” President Hichilema stated. He noted that military honours were prepared by the South African Defence Force “in vain,” adding, “For this unfortunate situation, we extend our sincere apologies to President Ramaphosa, the Government, and the people of South Africa.”

The President confirmed that as of the close of Thursday, 19 June 2025, the extended national mourning period has officially ended. “Our country cannot afford a state of indefinite mourning,” he said, noting that all avenues for dialogue had been exhausted.

“Mr. Lungu was not only an ordinary citizen but our 6th Republican President. While we recognise that he belongs to a family, he also belongs to the nation of Zambia,” he emphasized, asserting that Mr. Lungu’s burial should rightfully take place on Zambian soil with full national honours.

President Hichilema assured the public that government doors remain open for further engagement with the Lungu family but cautioned against any disorder or lawlessness. “Let us remain united as a nation and maintain the peace we are known for,” he urged.

In closing, the Head of State paid tribute to Mr. Lungu, saying, “May the soul of our departed former republican president, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, rest in eternal peace.”

The address marks a critical moment in Zambia’s handling of a former leader’s passing, highlighting the delicate balance between national obligation and familial rights, amid calls for continued peace and unity.

Kyabala Webster CF Promises Transparent, Selfless Leadership for Kimasala Ward

Solwezi, Zambia – June 15, 2025

With just weeks remaining before the Kimasala Ward by-election, residents are being urged to vote for change and development. Among the voices calling for transformation is that of Kyabala Webster, an aspiring candidate who has pledged to bring transparent and selfless leadership to one of the largest and most underserved wards in North-Western Province.

Speaking during a community engagement meeting, Kyabala expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of infrastructure within Kimasala Ward, particularly the local markets that serve as economic lifelines for many residents.

Mr. Kyabala highlighted the urgent need for complete and experienced leadership capable of delivering results and addressing long-standing challenges. He criticized the current state of governance in Solwezi, describing it as a "rotten seed" that has failed to bear fruit for the people.

Promising a new era of active representation, Kyabala pledged to prioritize infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance if elected. His campaign is centered on restoring hope to the people of Kimasala through accountability, transparency, and service above self.

Residents are expected to head to the polls on July 10, 2025, in a by-election that is being closely watched as a test of confidence in local leadership.

Kyabala Webster’s Supporters Rally for Change in Kimasala Ward By-Election

Solwezi, Zambia – June 14, 2025

As the July 10 Kimasala Ward by-election draws near, political tensions are rising, with some residents and opposition supporters calling for a political shift after years of alleged neglect by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

Kyabala Webster, the Citizen First candidate, is gaining growing support from disenchanted locals in areas such as Kandundu, Magrade, Zambia Compound, Highland, Mulemba Villa, and the greater Kimasala area. Supporters are calling for what they describe as a “disciplining” of the UPND, accusing the party of repeatedly taking the people for granted.

Community voices are pointing fingers at previous councillors Hon. Kamwandi and Hon. Kakinga, both elected under the UPND banner but criticized for “abandoning” the ward after winning elections.

Criticism also extended to infrastructure issues, including the uncompleted traffic lights at Copper Corner and a lack of tangible development projects in the ward.

Adding fuel to the fire, UPND’s selection of its candidate has sparked outrage, with detractors accusing Hon. Mulusa of sidelining credible local leaders in favor of his “boy” – a move described by opposition supporters as disrespectful to the community.

The Kimasala by-election is shaping up to be a fierce contest, as frustration over unfulfilled promises and demands for genuine representation fuel opposition momentum. Whether this growing dissatisfaction will translate into votes on July 10 remains to be seen.

Mulusa outlined several completed government projects and promised to prioritize clean and safe water, improved road networks, and other key infrastructure needs.

He noted that Kimasala Ward has lagged behind in development and emphasized the urgency of addressing the area’s challenges. Hon. Mulusa pledged continued government support to uplift the ward’s living standards and create better opportunities for residents.

Kalumbila Resident Questions Lifetime Tenure for MPs Amid Youth Concerns

Kalumbila resident Arnold Mutanga has raised concerns over the perceived imbalance in proposed governance reforms. Speaking on the issue, Mutanga questioned why the proposal suggests a 10-year tenure for mayors while leaving the tenure of Members of Parliament (MPs) unlimited. He argues that this discrepancy contradicts the stated intention of promoting youth, women, and persons with disabilities in leadership.

Mutanga pointed out that allowing MPs to contest for life limits opportunities for young leaders to rise. He stressed the need for equal limitations across all political offices.

He urged lawmakers to rethink the proposal and ensure it genuinely reflects inclusivity and democratic renewal in leadership.
