I started freelancing on Upwork in 2018, and it took five years to reach this point.
Starting was challenging.
I had no previous experience, no college degree, and had never taken a course in social media marketing.
My English needed to be stronger.
Plus, back then, there wasn't any AI (and even if there was, I wasn't aware of it).
But somehow, I found Upwork and created a profile, knowing it was where people found jobs.
I started as a data entry person.
I needed to learn how to set up the profile, what a cover letter was, and other basics.
But here's how I did it:
-I visited other freelancers' profiles and took ideas on making a good profile.
-I researched cover letters and how to write one.
-I wrote cover letters to see what worked and kept updating them based on what I learned.
-I'm not great at asking for help, so I did almost everything independently, but the Upwork community was a great help.
After six months of hard work, I landed my first client, who hired me as a social media assistant.
Even though I didn't have much money at the time, my focus wasn't on money; it was on learning.
They initially assigned me 6 hours of work, but I put in 12 because I feared losing.
That project lasted a year, during which I earned $2K and received outstanding feedback.
Working with them was a great experience. They were humble and knowledgeable.
When your manager is the CEO of a blockchain company, and you work closely with them, you learn things that few people know.
My manager spent two hours every day teaching me how blockchain works, telling me everything about the blockchain industry, and recommending what type of marketing works well in this space.
Sometimes, they assigned me challenging tasks, and I wanted to give up, but I'm glad I didn't.
These lessons helped build my entire career.
Even with some experience, I was afraid I wouldn't get another client.
But I was wrong; within a few weeks, I got another client and then another.
Over the past five years, I've maintained consistency in my working hours and earnings daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.
It wasn't easy.
Different clients want different things, and it's up to you to deliver.
Sometimes, I felt like quitting, but I kept going because I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of breaking me.
This post is to tell my younger peers that it's not about circumstances, knowledge, expertise, or taking courses to start.
All it takes is the courage to start and the passion to keep going.
Trust me on this: if passion doesn't drive your actions, it wastes your potential.
If you want to do something or start freelancing, all you have to do is
"Start."
You'll learn everything you need if you're passionate enough!
