We often hear it, but how true is the phrase 'Money can't buy happiness?' Is there a correlation between the two, and if so, what can we learn from it? It turns out, that if you think money and happiness are exclusive, you simply aren't spending it right.😩

We're a group of students from the City University of Hong Kong working on a media and communication project 📱
We are studying the topic of how social media promotes materialism Ⓜ️

How to rectify materialism?🥹
✅ Adopt the ‘hygge’ lifestyle
Hygge = “coziness of the soul” (a Danish term)
✨“an atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things” (Wiking, 2016, p.6) 🤍
The concept of Hygge lives within several languages, e.g.
Gezelligheid - in Dutch 🇳🇱
Koselig - in Norwegian 🇳🇴
Gemütlichkeit - in German 🇩🇪
Hominess - in Canadian English 🇨🇦
In British/American English, it is known as “cosiness from simple things”. 🫧

How to adopt the ‘hygge’ lifestyle?
💡A few key points:
🌼PRESENCE
Less screen time!!! Live life to the furthest!!🌈
🌼PLEASURE
Have a healthy diet🥦, and enjoy your every meal 🥘, with family/friends
🌼TOGETHERNESS
Spend time with your loved ones👭👫👨‍👩‍👧‍👦, even it’s a afternoon cuddling on the sofa doing nothing!! 🛋
🌼EXERCISE
Do sports, yoga 🧘🏻‍♀️ , running 🏃🏻‍♀️ , stretching 🙆🏻‍♀️ , hiking 🥾, playing with pets 🐈 🐕 … all could do!! Be close to nature🌿 and get some sunlight☀️ definitely no harm to create some master pieces with your drawing kit along!!

Read something, learn something, experience something or you could write your own ✍🏻 …..
🌼GRATITUDE
Always be grateful and thankful. Never take anything for granted, even your ever single breathe 🫁, heartbeat 🫀, treasure your time alive. It could be someone holding the door for you 🚪 , having a homey dinner at your granny’s 🤤 , and lots more for you to find out in your life!!!🫧

👉🏻 in short, do activities that don’t require vast amounts of money and luxuries

Two flows are involved in the transfer of information and influence from the mass media to audiences👂
☝️st Flow: Media ➡️ KOLs (key opinion leaders)
✌️nd Flow: KOLs ➡️ public

😮Hypothesis:
It stipulates that mass media content first reaches “opinion leaders”, 🗣 people who are active media users and who collect, interpret, and diffuse the meaning of media messages 💬 to less-active media consumers 👬👭

👦🏻👧🏻Children or teenagers are more prone to be persuaded ❤️‍🩹 and the influential people tend to affect their brand preferences 💸💡

would compare their living standards with others 🥲
(for example teens admire the luxurious lifestyle of KOL🥹)
and follow the mainstream trend📈

What is materialism? 🤑

According to the Isthmus (2015), materialism means a value that tends to put a relatively high priority on making a lot of money 💰 and having many possessions, as well as on image and popularity, which are almost always expressed in the form of money and possessions 💸

Chasing luxury gadgets ⌚️💻 and lifestyle especially the iPhone trend 📱and Staycation trend 🧖‍♀️ are the main examples that illustrate materialism.

📱 iPhone trend:
Apple 🍎 takes up 48.31% of the Hong Kong mobile vendor market share, followed by Samsung with 28.5%, reflecting Hong Kongese are biased towards Apple 😮

The consumption pattern of getting a new iPhone 📱 by following suit enables young buyers to obtain attention and recognition from peers. 👯👯‍♂️

🧖‍♀️ Staycation trend:
According to a survey last year, 85% of Hongkongers said they wanted to go on a staycation in the next 6 months and 60% have been on a staycation already 🤯
