National Nutrition Week is celebrated in India from 1 to 7 September every year.

According to UNICEF, the theme of Nutrition Month 2023 is "Healthy Diet Gawing Affordable for All." The main aim of observing Nutrition Week in our country is to create awareness among people about the benefits of nutrition and promote healthy and hygienic eating habits.

So we thought of making it the theme for the September edition of the magazine. Hope you like it.

In India, the National Small Industry Day is celebrated on 30 August every year, to support and promote small Industries. This day is specially dedicated to motivating and promoting small industrial businesses. It also helps to promote small-scale business industry growth. The importance of the small-scale business sector is huge in the overall economic growth of a Nation.

And so how could NAINEN stay behind?

Thus this cover story.

It has taken a long time to get it done but I am so happy with the result - one of the most cherished cover stories.

July will always be my favourite month!♥️

Thus in this favourite month, the cover story is on a Power Couple doing business together. As always, it has been a great pleasure to write about them.

There are some other equally interesting ladies like the Craft series Lora's Baked Basket Niraalee Shah to know and read about in this edition of my favourite month. Do let me know if you come across some wonderful women in your life - I would love to feature them in the forthcoming editions!

And as I have not asked for a long time, do let me know what you would like to read in future issues of the magazine. Your opinion counts a lot.

Mumbai Police and CRY join hands to stop child labour in the city

In continuation of its efforts to protect the rights of underprivileged children, Mumbai Police and Child Rights and You–CRY joined hands for a special campaign to raise awareness on the issue of child labour. The Mumbai Police along with volunteers of CRY organized the drive across various hotspots in the city to educate people and compel them to say no to child labour in any form. The 10-day campaign kickstarted on June 1 from Sassoon Dock in Colaba and then expanded to the slum areas of Pydhonie, Dharavi, Nagpada, Shivajinagar, Govandi, Oshiwara, Samata Nagar and Malwani. These areas witness the highest number of child labour being employed. The campaign culminated on World Day Against Child Labour on June 12.

Street plays by the volunteers and lectures, talks and one-on-one conversations between the locals and the police were conducted in various mohallas of the slums which saw a large turnout. Nagpada witnessed the highest number of people eager to understand the issue and many even supported the campaign by vowing to not hire children henceforth. The campaign is also being simultaneously conducted across various housing societies in the city as well.

The Mumbai Police has been instrumental in actively monitoring these areas over the years in not only identifying but also rescuing children from errant employers as well.

CRY has been working towards the eradication of child labour for many decades now. The first NGO to believe in and work towards the welfare of children, CRY believes it is the right of every child to have access to education and a good life. While 96% of children in CRY’s project areas between the ages of 6 to 18 years are protected from child labour. 85 % of children between the ages of 6 to 18 years are in school.

Ms Kreeanne Rabadi, Regional Director, West, CRY says, “CRY is extremely honoured to be partnering with the Mumbai Police to drive the message to the public that every child needs a childhood, and child labour puts an end to that. The pandemic period was a testing time for many children, and a large number dropped out of school or were being pushed into child labour. In 2022-23, CRY was successful in rescuing over 2000 children from child labour. Together with the Police, we continue our efforts to ensure that all children should be in school, and not working."

It feels great to be Two!

The past two years have taught me so many things and I am thankful to every woman who shared her story with the magazine.

Thus in the Second Anniversary edition, I have brought to light the most affectionate aspect of a woman - her motherhood. And it's a great honour to have , NATIONAL LEVEL FOOTBALL REFEREE and her mother on the cover page.

Other equally amazing women and have either shared their experiences as a mother or the loving aspect of their mothers.

Heartfelt gratitude to all the supporters and contributors right from the launch of the magazine on this day two years back - it would not have been possible without your valuable stories.

Happy to release the April edition of the magazine - a World Book Day special. WBD was created on 23 April 1995 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Also known as World Book and Copyright Day, WBD is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading.

WBD is a day that remembers prominent authors such as Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

So we at NAINEN planned the cover story of the April edition to celebrate this beautiful day to keep alive the enjoyment of books and reading. What else can a nainen do on hot April afternoons if not read? So, Happy Reading!

Leading child rights NGO, Child Rights and You – CRY organized a one-day Regional Consultation on Child Protection with a special focus on Child Marriage - Situational Analysis of Child Marriage and Recommendations based on collective learning and experience at the YMCA in Mumbai.

The discussion was attended by representatives of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women as well as officials and representatives from Women and Child Development Maharashtra, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, Mumbai Police, representatives from Tata Institute of Social Service (TISS), Yuva, Majlis, CCDT, Childline and others.

Child Rights and You strives to bridge the gap between systems and communities to ensure a safe and healthy childhood for all children, particularly girls. To ensure child safety and prevent child marriages, CRY believes that it is crucial to bring the topic of child marriage to the forefront through joint efforts with the government.

“It was a very fruitful discussion organised by CRY. The issue was very good and I congratulate them for organizing this. The topic of child marriage has been a top priority for the Women and Child Development (WCD) of Maharashtra and we have been taking all the necessary steps to see that WCD is present whenever any issue related to this arises,” said Deepa Thakur, Deputy Secretary, Maharashtra Women's Commission.

Kumar Nilendu, General Manager - CRY West Region said, “CRY has strong interventions on child protection focussed on child marriage across the country. The interventions of CRY on child marriage are designed based on analysis of the situation from the ground. CRY also works with all other stakeholders including the concerned govt departments and self-governance structures. We must continue to learn and build upon our programmatic interventions on the ground. One of the important facts is that child marriage is a social issue and hence it requires that we all come together to address this issue. With this background, CRY organized this regional consultation on Child Marriage wherein we have brought different stakeholders on a common platform to build synergy and address this issue collaboratively and effectively. We have received support from the Maharashtra commission for women, WCD Department, SCPCR, TISS, and NGOs working on the ground and importantly we also invited Sarpanchs’ from two states to deliberate on the issue of child marriage and resolve to work together on this issue.”
