11 years ago today, the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took place, taking 26 lives. 26 lives that were in a place of learning, a place of community, a place of connection, what they thought and hoped was a place of safety. In the years since, we have seen so many other shootings at schools. So many other lives taken. Yet, it never gets easier to witness or more comprehendible to understand how someone could do this. How someone could take someone else's life, especially in an elementary school.

Be reminded today that we all have a voice. We all can make a difference. We can all speak up and move humanity forward, asking for common senses gun laws that would make events like Sandy Hook, and the so many other school shootings, preventable. Let's remember these lives lost on this day and make changes that protect us all. Let's honor the families that have been forever changed, and make sure this is no one else's reality.

The Carter family shared today that former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia. I have long admired Rosalynn’s work in mental health and caregiving. She started to help break the stigma of the mental load that impacts caregivers. One in 10 older Americans have dementia, a condition that affects overall mental health, and caring for these loved ones can be extremely difficult, draining, and lonely. Through my own experience caring for my father with Alzheimer’s and as the founder of , I have learned so much about the increased impacts of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving on women, in fact more than 60% of all Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers are women. Let’s hold Rosalynn and the entire Carter family in our hearts, and hope that her mission of supporting caregivers and raising awareness of the mental health issues involved continue to grow.
