Dwelling on either doesn't serve us unless it helps us prepare for the actions we need to take in the present moment. To break the cycle of thoughts about the past or future, we must interrupt the dialogue by redirecting our focus
Rather than focusing on thoughts that don't serve us, we can redirect our attention to the present moment using the following exercise.
DISRUPTING AN UNKIND MIND CYCLE
~Pause and take a moment to stop what you're doing, bringing your attention to the present.
~Slow down your breathing, focusing on deep inhales and exhales, and feel the relief as you shift your focus from your mind to your body.
~Ground yourself in the present by engaging your five senses: What can you see, touch, smell, taste, and hear?
~Question your thoughts to create distance: Are these thoughts true? How do I know they are true? Is there a more empowering perspective?
~Engage in soothing internal dialogue. What comforting words can you offer yourself? What thoughts can bring warmth and space right now?
~Give yourself the same level of kindness and compassion you would offer to a child in distress.
