I was packing away his winter clothes, already overwhelmed with grief, when I found something in the pocket of his old jacket. It wasn’t a receipt or loose change. It was a small, worn piece of paper, folded tightly.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it. Inside, there was only a small key and a single address. I recognized the street, but we had never been there. He had kept this secret for years, hidden away.

I drove there immediately, heart pounding. The key opened a dusty apartment door. Inside, I found a life he never told me about. There were photos, letters, and a locked room that would change everything I thought I knew about him.

I stood there, frozen, not knowing if I should open it or run away.

I was finally sorting through his things when I picked up Dad’s old work bag. I almost threw it out, but I checked the pockets first.

Inside, tucked in a hidden lining, was an envelope I’d never seen.

My heart dropped when I saw the date. It was from the year he said he was doing okay, but the papers inside told a different story. He had been hiding the truth from us for years to protect us.

I was sorting through his old work documents when I found it taped to the underside of his desk drawer. It was a worn envelope with my name on it, sealed and dated two decades ago.
