The tale of Generic Elective points to the idea that leaders in a particular field will ultimately sustain. The adage of conglomerates, ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’, seems less relevant in context to GE, which once used-to-be a market leader.

GE has played well for years until 2000 but probably now finance prefers small to big, ones that are leaders in their industry and specialise in a particular sector. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean conglomerates are no longer in existence. Indian players like Tata and Reliance are still market leaders. Internationally, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Berkshire Hathaway and many more have a major market capitalization. It all lies in the ability to manage and sustain innovation.
