New overseas student enrolments have fallen by 15 per cent, according to the latest data from the Federal Education Department. The decline is being linked to higher visa fees and a growing political push to reduce migration numbers.
Politicians including Pauline Hanson and Andrew Hastie are calling for further cuts and are expected to campaign strongly on the issue.
However, Phil Honeywood, CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, argues that international students play a vital role in supporting the economy, filling workforce gaps, boosting tourism, and strengthening international relationships.
Honeywood discusses the impact of the downturn and the future of international education as this week’s guest on The Issue.
