I recently watched K2. It was on my watching list all along but after watching the trailer I didn't get any interest due to the lack of chemistry between the two leads. Then also it was on my watching list since it's one of the iconic kdramas of all the time.
Thoughts:
1. The leads Ji Chang Wook & Im Yoona has no chemistry, infact Choi Yoo Jin and K2 has more chemistry in this series. Choi Yoo Jin is the anti-hero of this series. Everyone has taken advantage of her love and care. i agree she's also done some ruthless and unforgivable things but no one in the series is clean and just good to the core. Everyone has their own motives in the series.
2. I so wished Choj Yoo Jin and K2 to end up together somehow, even if it was not romantically atleast as a friend. Strong character such as Jea Ha deserves a strong partner. I'm actually furious with the writers to even make it possible that a character like Jae Ha would like a girl who dances with a packet of ramen( i may have triggered few people , ops! I'm sorry that I'm not sorry). To me it was actually forced all along just to give this drama a cheesy, typical Kdrama ending. Choi Yoo Jin and K2 both protected each other from time to time whereas Anna only became liability from time to time for everybody. Having said that I'm not saying that the character is unimportant , infact Anna is equally important to this drama , the whole premise of the series is based on her only. But i didn't like how it was made Jae Ha's love interest. From what I see, it's just pity towards her being held captive for so long, who misses her family alot and the presence of his strong sense of justice, that's it! Anna is just a replacement of Raniya, whom he cannot protect and feels guilty and traumatized. Anna is more of his chance of redemption. Whereas he can connect with Yoo Jin at so many levels and vice-versa.
3. If the writers' intention was to pair up Anna & Jaeha then i think it was meaningless when Jaeha saved Yoo Jin from her family meeting. I understand it was needed for Jaeha to enter cloud 9 but if we really look at it, that family meeting was not something life threatening that Jaeha needed to intervene. Writers may have had shown something life threatening just like the previous incident, then it would have been more meaningful( my pov). If he wanted to protect Yoo Jin so badly as it was depicted in the beginning then it should've been continued all along not just in the beginning and in the end. Yoo Jin has gone to so many public places where she can easily be killed, where the hell was he? Writers have done injustice to Jae ha & K2's relationship. They have had juicy chemistry right infront of them through both of these characteristics but i think they failed to recognise it. According to me these are the loopholes for me.
If writers could've had dared to showcase Yoo Jin and K2 together then it would have been record breaking series. Yoo jin & Jaeha are the 2 leads who pulled the series throughout. Tbh I actually skipped Anna's part alot, not in the beginning, but later especially K2 & Anna's romance, it was so boring & unfitting to the entire plot, that it was almost a headache to bear these 2 together for me. It was a challenge to watch them together. I waited & waited for Yoo Jin & K2's part, because it was more interesting & fun to watch. Their relationship makes more sense and relatable to me than Anna K2's relationship, all perfect and lovey dovey which is not at all relatable.
It might be due to the fact that it was written and made for 2016, and here we are in 2021 where not only we're all matured, but from 2020 a drastic change in the content of kdramas have been evolved. Such examples are Itaewon Class, Start-up, It's Okay to not be Okay and many more.
Now I rest my case with an unfulfilling desire to see Ji Chang Wook & Song Yoon Ha together again in another drama where they would get a happy ending 🙂
