LH, LSU laud efforts of Patton in DAB areas
DIMAPUR, AUG 26 (NPN)

August 27, 2025
Lotha Hoho (LH) and Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) have expressed appreciation of the efforts of deputy chief minister, Y. Patton, who also holds border affairs portfolio, in resolving the ongoing eviction issue at the Disputed Area Belt (DAB).

LH: Lotha Hoho, in a release issued by its president Er. Mhondamo Ovung and joint secretary Er. Limhathung Odyuo while appreciating Patton’s efforts said he has been initiating for amicable settlement over the imbroglio caused by eviction carried out by the Assam government without proper coordination with the Nagaland government.
LH said the deputy CM had personally inspected the DAB at Niuland and Ralan areas, on July 24, 2025 followed by another visit on August 23, 2025.

LH said that in all these visits, its representatives accompanied Patton to put in joint efforts to retain the lands that belonged to Nagas and the Lotha tribe since time immemorial.

LH however, expressed concern over the comments made by “some journalists and press clubs” on the “so called unbecoming behavior” of the deputy chief minister at Ralan area while he was inspecting the DAB on August 23, 2025.
The hoho said that, the fact that the deputy CM held a public interaction meeting in the DAB was perhaps not pleasing to some, as per reports of some journalists.

LH said it was not trying to justify any of the contending parties; but want to put the comments and counter comments to rest.
The hoho asserted that none of the parties could claim absolute innocence, adding that “each surely has some lapses on their part.”
LH also stated that the journalists/reporters were also expected to report factual events and actual statements, without making critical comments of their own. LH also said that “those feeding the reporters” were also expected to be authentic and diplomatic.
It urged all concerned to stop blaming each other and stop publishing “self justifications.”
LH has instead urged all responsible to put in concerted joint efforts to settle the boundary dispute amicably and as per historical evidences and records.

LSU: Meanwhile, Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) acknowledged the deputy chief minister Y Patton’s “meritorious efforts” in safeguarding Naga ancestral land.
In a press release, LSU president Lirhonthung E Kithan and education & statistical secretary Nyanthung M Khuvung urged the deputy chief minister and the state government to assess and address the issue in the best interest of the state.

LSU also affirmed solidarity and unwavering support in protecting Naga homeland.
LSU has, also clarified that the “unfortunate incident” of August 23 should not be construed as an attack on the media in general, but rather as “an expression of frustration over misinformation propagated by a particular individual.”

LSU stated that on August 21, a local TV news reporter accused the deputy chief minister and state government officials of not visiting the eviction affected areas. LSU said that “this unfounded report” deeply disappointed and provoked the deputy CM, that led to the remarks made on August 23.

LSU expressed the view that slandering the deputy chief minister’s efforts and integrity was “defamatory in nature” and would not be tolerated.
LSU also dubbed as “erroneous” certain critical views regarding deputy chief minister’s handling of the ongoing Nagaland-Assam border tension in Ralan area.
LSU stated that deputy chief minister “indeed” visited the affected area twice, accompanied by MLAs—Achumbemo Kikon and Y. Mhombemo Humtsoe—district administration, and police department.

During those visits, LSU said interaction sessions were conducted to address public grievances, which was attended LSU members.
LSU said its president along with office bearers accompanied and witnessed the deputy chief minister visit to the DAB areas on many occasions.

LSU said after the visit by Dy. CM, a company of NAP (IR) was deployed in Ralan Area and that since then the deputy chief minister had been coordinating with various authorities, including CSOs, village councils, district administration, border magistrate, and police departments.
LSU said Patton recently held a joint coordination meeting with the Assam Forest minister and successfully appealed for the dismantling of stone pillars and fencing besides halting plantation drive, which was complied with by Assam Forest department.
LSU appreciated the efforts and contribution by media fraternity over the issue but also expressed disappointment over “statements made without proper facts and verification”, which it said “may be provoking and misleading.”(News credit: Nagaland Post)

Organisations flay Patton for rebuking journalist
Organisations flay Patton for rebuking journalist
DIMAPUR, AUG 25 (NPN)

August 26, 2025
Several organisations have expressed concern and condemnation over the reported rebuke of a journalist by deputy chief minister Y. Patton during a public programme at Tchuchanphen village, Wokha district on August 23.
NPCC: Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed deep concern over the incident involving Patton, during a public programme at Tchuchanphen village, Wokha district. In a statement, NPCC said Patton was reportedly seen berating a member of the media fraternity while the latter was discharging his professional duty.
While leaders and the media may at times have differences, NPCC said such matters must be addressed through dialogue grounded in mutual respect.
It said journalists played a crucial role in informing the public and holding institutions accountable, often under challenging circumstances. Therefore, it asserted that both leaders and citizens must uphold an atmosphere of decorum and civility when dealing with differences or perceived shortcomings involving the media community. NPCC urged Patton to reflect on the incident and ensure that such situations do not recur in the future. “Respect for the freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our democratic ethos, and we trust that all leaders will uphold this fundamental principle,” the committee stated.
MPC: Mokokchung Press Club (MPC) has expressed deep concern over instances where journalists face intimidation or harassment while carrying out their professional duties, stating that such actions not only undermine the dignity of the profession but also threaten the freedom of the press.
In a statement, MPC said it was disturbed by the public rebuke directed at a Hornbill TV reporter during a meeting on August 23 by deputy chief minister Y. Patton, followed by his subsequent clarification disputing the report in question.
While disagreements over facts may arise, MPC said addressing them through intimidation or denial of access was unacceptable in a democracy, and that such disputes must be resolved through the right of reply and established institutional channels, not from the podium.
MPC reminded that journalists have both the right and responsibility to ask questions, seek clarity, and report events without fear of reprisal. Any attempt to silence or restrict the press, it said, undermines not only the profession but also public’s fundamental right to information.
At the same time, MPC asserted that it was the responsibility of the media to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and accountability in the discharge of its duties.
The club called for collective respect towards journalists and reiterated that a free and independent press was non-negotiable in the functioning of any healthy democracy, adding that the press fraternity would continue to stand united against any attempt to undermine or intimidate its members.

Ex-LS candidate: Ex-Lok Sabha candidate Hayithung Bill Lotha has strongly condemned the “anti-democratic” conduct of deputy chief minister Y. Patton.
Hayithung termed Patton’s action as “distasteful, harmful and highly condemnable in a democratic polity,” adding that intimidating and singling out a journalist amounted to hate speech and public shaming. He stated that the concerned journalist was simply carrying out his professional duty and such acts undermine the freedom of the press, the fourth pillar of democracy.
Calling upon leaders to uphold press freedom, Lotha urged that journalists must be allowed to perform their responsibilities without fear or harassment. (News Credit: Nagaland Post)

DIMAPUR — Dimapur Police have filed an interim chargesheet in connection with the murder of 31-year-old Kesuthlungle Newme, who was found brutally killed near NSCN (IM) Martyrs Park at Pimla village on April 7.

An update issued on Monday stated that the accused (unnamed), arrested on April 10, has been found prima facie liable under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the murder was committed in a fit of rage while the accused was under the influence of alcohol. A supplementary chargesheet will be filed once the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report is received from an out-of-state facility, as Nagaland does not yet have an in-house DNA division, it stated.

Meanwhile, under the Victim Compensation Scheme, the Peren District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has initiated relief measures for the minor child of the deceased, it added.

The incident

It also provided a brief rundown of the case. On the evening of April 7, around 7.52 pm, Chümoukedima police received information about a suspected murder near a pond at Pimla, about 240 feet from Maikham road.

A police team led by the ACP Chümoukedima, along with personnel from the Women Police Station and forensic experts, rushed to the spot. The body of Kesuthlungle Newme, wife of Chubatemsu of Mhaikam village, was recovered and later shifted to District Hospital Dimapur for post-mortem.

The following day, an FIR was lodged by Teusing Newme, VDB secretary of Mhaikam village, reporting that she had been murdered by unidentified miscreants. A case (Women PS Case No. 006/25) was registered, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an ADCP was constituted.

Investigators established that the victim, a daily wage earner engaged in selling vegetables including bananas, had gone to the vicinity of NSCN (IM) Martyrs Park between 10.30 and 11 am on April 7 to purchase bananas.

Later that evening, around 7 pm, her body was discovered near a river pond in a “brutally murdered condition.”

Police said that multiple visits to the crime scene and suspected locations led to the recovery of key evidence, which established the accused’s culpability. (Credit: Eastern Mirror Nagaland)
