Public Schools Want Your Children to be Poor

Until recently, California’s public schools did not require students to take a financial literacy course before graduating. For generations, students were not taught how to budget, invest, avoid debt, or build wealth over a lifetime. Message. Remain dependent on government assistance.

Tim Ranzetta, founder of Next Gen Personal Finance, spent years urging the California Legislature and California School Board to make financial literacy a graduation requirement. Those efforts repeatedly stalled. Frustrated by the lack of progress, he personally invested approximately $5 million to fund a statewide ballot initiative and gather the signatures needed to qualify the measure for the November 2024 ballot.

That changed everything.

He got the attention of Sacramento legislature and the Teachers union who opposed being told what to teach.

Faced with a ballot measure that could bypass the Legislature, lawmakers acted. They passed AB 2927, making personal financial literacy a high school graduation requirement and eliminating the need for the initiative.

Think about what that says about California’s political process. It took one entrepreneur risking millions of dollars of his own money to accomplish what years of lobbying and discussion could not.

The new requirement takes effect with the 2027–28 school year. Many Californians are left wondering why students must wait years for a course when high-quality financial literacy curriculum is already widely available.

Why 3 years to implement a straightforward solutions? As the old saying goes: ask for the time, and they’ll tell you how to build a clock.

We need the Children’s Educational Opportunity Act.

California Leads the Nation in the Number of Dumbest Cities - Study Shows

California is home to 6 of the 10 least-educated large metropolitan areas in the nation, according to a June 29 WalletHub study of the 150 most populous metro areas.

The California metros ranked among the worst 10 are Visalia ( #2), Bakersfield ( #4), Modesto ( #5), Fresno ( #6), Stockton ( #7), and Salinas ( #8).

When state standardized tests show that 34% of California public school 11th graders can’t read and 70% can’t do basic math, these rankings should concern every Californian.

Every child deserves access to a quality education, regardless of family income or ZIP code. It’s time to level the educational playing field.
