This year marks 152 years of iconic Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi's birth, a day dedicated by the Indian government to its sanitation goals. Seven years ago, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign, he announced October 2, 2019, as the day India will be free of open defecation (ODF). Savitri Devi (35), resident of Pul Mithai slum says she wakes up early everyday to get fresh before the daylight.

"In 60 months, 600 million people have been given access to toilets, more than 110 million toilets have been built. The whole world is amazed to hear this," PM told a crowd in Ahmedabad city in 2019.Meanwhile, in Savitri’s neighbourhood, things look no different than before. Since Savitri’s jhuggi is near the railway tracks, she said, “ MCD workers refuse to build public toilets, claiming it as the responsibility of railways, we don’t know whom to approach.”
