Grace liberates and obligates. It redeems man from the slavery of sin and liberates him for and obligates him to obedience to righteousness (Romans 6:17-18), which becomes both duty and delight.

“Our sins were imputed to Christ, and He bore the awful price as our substitute. Conversely, His righteousness is imputed to all who believe, and they stand before God fully justified, clothed in the pure white garment of His perfect righteousness... God treated Christ as if He had lived our wretched, sinful life, so that He could treat us as if we had lived Christ’s spotless, perfect life.”

— John MacArthur, The Gospel According to Paul

For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my word and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Liberal scholars often claim they approach Scripture with an open mind in order to evaluate the word of God and judge its accuracy. In reality they come with the presupposition that human reason is superior to divine revelation. That is not an open mind; it is a closed heart that evidences a mind-set predisposed against God and truth. People cannot stand as the judge of Scripture; Scripture stands as the judge of people.

Repentance in the Christian life is twofold. We must distinguish between repentance as turning to Christ in an act of saving faith, and repentance in the ongoing life of Christian discipleship. Martin Luther famously began his Ninety-Five Theses by insisting that the entire life of believers is to be one of repentance. Repentance is necessary in becoming a Christian, and it is necessary in living as a Christian.

Christian history, biography and personal experience show us that Christians who read have tended to be stronger Christians than they otherwise would have been. The use of books has been one of the marks of the spiritual vitality and health of the Christian church. In fact, what we discover in many biographies is that those who have been the greatest Christian activists have also been the most prolific producers of and readers of Christian literature.

Early in his ministry, Martin Luther, the reformer, had little time for Christian literature. Like others since, he tended to regard Christian literature as antagonistic to the spirit of the gospel. The gospel, he said, is about the preached word and we must preach. Yet that same Martin Luther (incredible though it seems) was responsible for one-third of all the books published in the German language in the first half of the sixteenth century! On every bookshelf in Germany, one out of every three books was probably authored by Luther!

Why was this? Luther saw that by writing he could spread the message of the gospel and the joy of the Reformation; by reading Christian people would grow in grace and the church of Jesus Christ would be built up and strengthened.

Think about biographies you have read. Isn't it true that the majority of greatly-used Christians were men and women who were always using, in one sense or another, printed material? Thus, in the purposes of God, using Christian literature has been a sign of vitality in the people of God.

There are many reasons for this. One is that the Christian faith is a faith of the mind. Faith is not a mindless activity; it involves understanding the gospel. Not that it requires a high IQ in order to be a Christian, but the renewing of the mind (Rom. 12:1-2) is essential for the transformation of your life.

If we are to be passionate in our pursuit of personal holiness, the first thing we must establish is that holiness is possible. It sounds humble to say, “I cannot obey God for one nanosecond in my life,” but it’s not true. Acting like holiness is out of reach for the ordinary Christian doesn’t do justice to the way the Bible speaks about people like Zechariah and Elizabeth, who “were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord” (Luke 1:6). It doesn’t take seriously the Lord’s commendation of Job as “a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil” (Job 1:8). And there’s Paul, who frequently commends his churches and his ministry partners for their obedience and godly example. It sure seems like holiness is a possibility for God’s people.

Likewise, Jesus teaches that the wise person hears his words and does them (Matt. 7:24). James says the same thing (James 2:22–25). There’s no hint that doing God’s word was only a hypothetical category. Quite the contrary, we are told to disciple the nations so that they might obey everything Jesus commanded (Matt. 28:19–20).

According to the Canons of Dort, assurance of salvation comes from three sources: (1) from faith in the promises of God, (2) from the testimony of the Holy Spirit testifying to our spirits that we are children of God, and (3) from a serious and holy pursuit of a clear conscience and of good works (5.10). These are not three ways to get saved; they are three ways to be confident that we are saved.

Of course, our effort can never win God’s justifying favor. Whatever we manage to work out is really what God purposed to work in us (Phil. 2:12–13; cf. 1 Cor. 15:10; Heb. 2:11). The gospel is truly the A to Z of the Christian life. But let us not misunderstand what it means to be gospel-centered. As gospel Christians, we are not afraid of striving, fighting, and working. These are good Bible words. The gospel that frees us from self-justification also frees us for obedience. God did not tell the Israelites, “Work hard and I’ll set you free from Egypt.” That’s law without a gospel. But neither did God tell them, “I love you. I set you free by my grace. I ask nothing more except that you believe in this good gift.” That’s gospel with no law. Instead, God redeemed the people by his mercy, and that mercy made a way for obedience.

“Christians work—they work to kill sin, and they work to live in the Spirit. They have rest in the gospel, but never rest in their battle against the flesh and the devil. As J. C. Ryle put it, the child of God has two great marks about him: he is known for his inner warfare and his inner peace.”

LORD JESUS,

Give me a deeper repentance, a horror of sin, a dread of its approach; Help me chastely to flee it, and jealously to resolve that my heart shall be thine alone. Give me a deeper trust, that I may lose myself to find myself in thee, the ground of my rest, the spring of my being. Give me a deeper knowledge of thyself as saviour, master, lord, and king. Give me deeper power in private prayer, more sweetness in thy word, more steadfast grip on its truth. Give me deeper holiness in speech, thought, action, and let me not seek moral virtue apart from thee.
