On July 15, 1993, Cal Ripken, Jr. hit his 278th home run as a shortstop, breaking Ernie Banks' record. The Hall of Famers played different infield positions during their careers, with Banks going deep a total of 512 times for Chicago, and Ripken clearing the fences on 431 occasions for the Orioles.

On July 15, 1980, Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds broke Yogi Berra's record for career home runs by a catcher, hitting his 314th. Bench's 314th home run, a two-run shot against the Montreal Expos, also marked his 347th career home run overall. Bench's achievement was celebrated with a congratulatory telegram from Berra, who famously quipped, "I always thought the record would stand until it was broken."

The record was later broken by Mike Piazza.

On July 15, 1973, Nolan Ryan tossed a no-hitter for the California Angels, in a game against the Detroit Tigers. Ryan finished the game allowing only four baserunners, all on walks. He also struck out 17 batters – the highest total of the season for the right-hander.

The effort was Ryan’s second no-hitter of the 1973 campaign, as he had blanked the Kansas City Royals earlier in the year on May 15th.

On July 15, 1967, a Roberto Clemente line drive fractured Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson's right fibula during a 6-3 loss to the Pirates. The injury sidelined Gibson until Labor Day, but he recovered enough to allow only three earned runs in three complete World Series game victories over the Red Sox.

On July 14, 1967, Eddie Mathews hit his 500th career home run becoming the seventh player in Major League Baseball history to reach the milestone. Playing for the Houston Astros, Mathews hit a three-run homer off future Hall of Famer Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. This helped the Astros to an 8-6 victory over the Giants.

On July 14, 1968, Hank Aaron hit his 500th home run, playing for the Atlanta Braves against the San Francisco Giants. The milestone shot, a three-run blast in the third inning off Giants pitcher Mike McCormick, was a decisive factor in the Braves' 4-2 victory at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Aaron was the eighth player in Major League Baseball history to reach 500 home runs.
