Minnis says he believes he will get a second chance.

“I believe that,” said Minnis, who appeared on the Our TV talk show “On the Record” with host Jerome Sawyer last Thursday.

“The Bahamian people know that I care about them. They know that my heart is with them. They know that I’m honest. What I say I will do and if I can’t do it, I will tell you.”

Asked why he decided to run for leader, Minnis told Sawyer, “I believe in two terms. I believe in a second term a government can make all those difficult decisions, decisions that are necessary to advance the country forward. I would still love to complete those programs, especially for the young people.”

Minnis said he wants to complete plans he had for the education system, dealing with state-owned-enterprises and land reform.

Sawyer asked Minnis if he thinks Pintard could carry out those plans.

Minnis said he can’t speak to what Pintard or the FNM would do.

The FNM’s loss was widely viewed as a rejection of Minnis, who had become deeply unpopular because of his handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – which ravaged parts of Abaco and Grand Bahama in 2019 – and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnis spent much of his interview with Sawyer defending his actions during Dorian and COVID.

“Every country was trying to determine what to do,” he said.

“There was no [playbook] that you could follow. There was no protocol, and so we had to write as we moved along. The entire world was locked down. You couldn’t go to the US and you couldn’t go to Canada. Everyone was on lockdown. We had to do the same.”

Asked if he would have done anything differently during COVID, Minnis said he would have had a better communications program.

“I think we fell down on communication,” he said. “If you are doing certain things and you are subjecting people to lockdown ... it is essential for you to communicate that with regularity. It is essential for you not to assume that they understand, but you must explain that in basic language repeatedly.”

PRIME Minister Philip “Brave” Davis has started discussions with the Saudi Arabian government on how the country can import fuel from the Middle Eastern country, according to Press Secretary Clint Watson.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Mr Watson said Mr Davis initiated the conversation when the delegation paid a courtesy call on him earlier this week and added the group appeared to be open to discussions on the matter.

“This week, the Saudi Arabian government placed a courtesy call led by their tourism minister,” Mr Watson said.

“One of the things that I think we’re looking towards is greater dialogue with (the) Saudi Arabian government particularly as we face what we see happening globally and here at home is inflation.

“We recognise that higher prices in food, higher prices in fuel and higher prices in goods coming to the country are all linked to one key thing — fuel, the rising oil prices and what Prime Minister Davis has been able to strategically do is to begin a discussion with the Saudi Arabian government on how we can work a network that accesses oil from them and to access fuel from them so that it will cut down on the overhead costs coming to the country.”

He also said: “It is a great strategy if we can work together with them in that regard and will significantly impact what we see happening at the ports, at the pumps and at the wholesalers because it all relies on the shipping costs, trucking costs and all that is going up with rising fuel prices so this is something that Prime Minister Davis initiated in conversation with them and something they are open to discussions with and we’re looking to see how quickly and soon we can begin that bout of discussions to bring relief here to our domestic supply.”

Vell what Da hell is DIS?!

Former PM Dr. Minnis was welcomed firstly by members of the BPL managers union who sat in the gallery. Den, members of Da opposition, saw dat, and joined Bahamians and gave Minnis a hero welcome.

BN says Da only time one will see
received dis type of treatment is when they are resigning or returning from being out sick.

Noticeably, Pintard was visibly angry when the union clapped for Minnis but to see parliamentary colleagues doing it says real Bahamians prefer Minnis.
