But beyond the adrenaline rush, do you truly know the intricate components that power these speed machines?

The Foundation of Speed

Go-karts might be compact, but their designs are packed with essential parts that contribute to their performance. The chassis, often composed of tubular steel, forms the framework that supports the vehicle. The engine, the beating heart of any go-kart, provides the power to propel it forward. With components like the carburettor and spark plug, the engine transforms fuel into energy, igniting the passion for speed.

Gearing Up for Victory

Every turn and straightaway requires precise maneuvering, facilitated by a range of components. The steering column and wheel provide much-needed control, while the throttle and brake pedals manage the acceleration and deceleration, dictating the pace of the race. The gear shift mechanism, another crucial part, allows drivers to adapt to various terrains and conditions, enhancing their strategic edge on the track.

Traction and Suspension

Go-karts hug the ground thanks to the suspension system, which consists of shock absorbers and springs. These elements work together to absorb shocks, ensuring a smoother ride even on uneven tracks. The tires, specially designed for traction and grip, optimize the kart's performance, allowing drivers to maintain their speed through corners and straights alike.

Unveiling the Names

The finishing straight of the IAA Mobility: The world’s biggest mobility trade fair runs until 10 September. At the Open Space in the centre of Munich, Porsche is celebrating ‘60 Years of the 911’ with an unusual sculpture.

As a background for selfies or simply an imposing model on an XXL scale, the huge silhouette of the 911 that spans the exhibition space on Wittelsbacherplatz has been a crowd favourite during the first days of the IAA Mobility. The reusable roof construction is an homage to the sports car icon. Exactly 60 years ago the 911 celebrated its premiere at the IAA.

Instead of ‘driving in its most beautiful form’ – the Porsche leitmotif for 60 years – the current motto on Wittelsbacherplatz is ‘celebrating in its most beautiful form’. Over an area of around 1,000 square metres, Porsche has created a family party atmosphere, with mascot Tom Targa entertaining the youngest car fans with games and journeys of discovery. Children and adults can either get a snapshot in a photo box or pose for a Polaroid taken by one of the hostesses. The photos are then available to download with a QR code, or as instant pictures there and then. The Open Space from Porsche is also part of the VDA Family Trail, and children can collect stamps at various stations here.

The on-stage programme consists of two alternating series: ‘Brave New Love’ informs viewers about the latest innovations, the sports car brand’s path to a sustainable future, and many other topics. ‘911 Love Stories’ centres around the car whose birthday is being celebrated. Its latest variant, the special 911 S/T model limited to 1,963 units, is being shown to the public for the first time at the Open Space. Another crowd favourite over the first days of the trade fair has been the Porsche Mission X. This spectacular concept study is the new interpretation of a hypercar, with Le Mans-style doors that open up and forward, and a high-performance, efficient electric powertrain.

With the Mission X, Porsche is providing a foretaste of an electric future. Meanwhile, many IAA visitors and Munich residents have been accepting an early opportunity to try out the E-Performance of the present, via a fleet of Taycans at the trade fair stand that are available for accompanied test drives. Interested visitors can book a drive in advance on the Porsche Test Drive page or in person at the Porsche Test Drive counter. And visitors who don’t just want to get around in a very environmentally-friendly fashion, but also fancy doing a little sport themselves, can take a ride on one of the Porsche eBikes.

05/09/2023

Over the 25 years since it pioneered the ludospace (leisure MPV) segment with its design in a class by itself, next-level practicality and the first ever sliding side door, Renault Kangoo has stayed in touch with its time and quintessentially innovative.

It is also a one-of-a-kind success story: Renault has sold over 4.4 million Kangoo vehicles in 50 countries around the world, and the electric version has been the bestseller in its segment since 2011. It is the best of both worlds: a car for families, with its elegant design and spaciousness, and a vehicle for professionals, thanks in particular to its boot space and robustness.

The Renault Kangoo line-up, which has moved upmarket and on-boarded innovations non-stop over the years, now includes a longer version, Grand Kangoo.

All-new Grand Kangoo is as practical as the standard version and comes with all the safety equipment and comfort-upgrading amenities. Like the Kangoo, the interior design features a dashboard finished in brushed dark wood, a comfortable cabin and improved ergonomics. The dashboard has been upgraded to include specific E-Tech data for the electric version.

Access to row 3 is made easier by the 2 wide 83 cm sliding doors (+18 cm compared with Kangoo), the low door sill and the folding seats in row 2. Practical for making it easier to get in and out of the car with other passengers (adults or teenagers), or to install a child in a car seat securely fastened with isofix mountings.

Grand Kangoo can be used for any purpose. Available as standard with a glazed tailgate, it is also possible to have hinged rear doors with 2/3-1/3 glazing for easy access to the boot, particularly where height is a constraint.

The large interior space is perfect for families looking for 7 large seats for very regular use and can accommodate passengers of all sizes in the greatest comfort.

The vehicle is also perfectly suited to childcare professionals, with 5 seats with isofix, ergonomic seating for children in baby seats or booster seats, or transport on demand, with the capacity to accommodate 7 adult passengers comfortably, with ease of movement in each seat, and the ability to change the modularity (for example 2/2/2) to make it even easier for occupants to settle in.

All-new Grand Kangoo E-Tech electric’s new 45 kWh (fully usable) lithium-ion battery has 8 independent and easily repairable modules, and gives the motor up to 265 km of WLTP range – with is plenty for most everyday drives at the best ownership and use costs.

If you stop for 10 minutes at an 80kW DC charging point, you can recover 80km of range. The batteries are guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 km. During this period, they are replaced free of charge if their capacity falls below 70% of their State Of Health (SoH).

All-new Grand Kangoo E-Tech Electric is powered by a 90 kW motor with 245 Nm of instantly available torque, so it drives smoothly in all situations. You can switch the driving mode to Eco, which limits power to 56 kW and caps the vehicle’s speed at 110 km/h to optimise range.

05/09/2023

BMW is consistently continuing its model offensive in the field of e-mobility and is presenting another all-electric variant of the new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the premium compact segment. The BMW iX1 eDrive20 (combined power consumption: 17.2 – 15.4 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, provisional values) enables a particularly attractive and at the same time economical entry into the world of premium electric mobility.

The second all-electric model variant of the compact SAV is powered by an electric motor with a maximum output of 150 kW/204 hp (with temporary boost) and has a range of 430 to 475 kilometres (provisional values according to WLTP).

By expanding its range in the premium compact segment, the BMW Group is opening up locally emission-free driving pleasure to broad target groups and thus providing additional impetus for the ramp-up of e-mobility.

The new BMW iX1 eDrive20 will be available from the start of production in November 2023 at a recommended retail price of 47,900 euros (incl. VAT). Like the BMW iX1 xDrive30 (combined power consumption: 18.1 – 16.8 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) it is manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg.

Highly efficient electric drive, state-of-the-art charging technology, excellent range

As in all of the brand’s current electric vehicles, the new BMW iX1 eDrive20 also uses the current fifth generation BMW eDrive technology. A highly integrated drive unit on the front axle of the new entry-level model generates an instantaneously available maximum torque of 247 Nm in addition to the maximum output of 150 kW/204 hp. The compact SAV accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 170 km/h.

The high-voltage battery, which is housed in the vehicle floor to save space, has a usable energy content of 64.7 kWh. Its high energy density, together with the efficiency of the e-motor, contributes to the the car’s favourable power consumption and delivers an excellent range compared to the competition. The Combined Charging Unit of the new BMW iX1 eDrive20 enables AC charging with up to 11 kW as standard.

This allows the high-voltage battery to be charged from zero to 100 percent of its capacity within 6.5 hours. Three-phase AC charging with an output of up to 22 kW is optionally available. This reduces charging time to 3:45 hours. The battery can be charged using direct current with a power of up to 130 kW. The battery’s state of charge can be increased from 10 to 80 percent within 29 minutes at a fast charging station.

The short charging times result from a particularly efficient charging software among other things. The charging power can be very specifically controlled while energy is being fed in. In addition, anticipatory thermal management ensures that the temperature of the high-voltage battery is optimally controlled in good time before a stopover at a fast-charging station. When the navigation system is active, the battery is automatically pre-conditioned before a planned charging stop. Pre-conditioning the battery can be manually activated and deactivated by the customer at any time.

Advanced operation thanks to new BMW iDrive with “QuickSelect”

The new BMW iX1 eDrive20 offers a comprehensive range of standard equipment, including the BMW Maps navigation system, 2-zone automatic air conditioning, numerous modern driver assistance systems, the Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and numerous innovative digital services.

The new BMW iDrive with “QuickSelect” and the new BMW Operating System 9 are also standard equipment. It enables a wider range of digital content for information and entertainment, faster update cycles for over-the-air functions as well as optimised access to many specific online services such as 3rd party apps, extended navigation and parking services and additional possibilities for personalisation, for example through further My Modes.

In this way, the BMW Operating System 9 also creates the conditions for the customer to customise the system to a high degree with additional digital services, which are available with the new BMW Digital Premium offer.

The BMW Curved Display is the heart of the display and control system.
