Episode Two is divided into two parts. Part One is focused on the History of Mental Health and how diagnosis and treatment changed from the 1700s to now.
A huge starting impact started in the late 1700s in France, thanks to Philippe Pinel, who is credited with being the first person to introduce humane methods in the treatment of the mentally ill and is considered "the father of modern psychiatry" by some. He was the Superintendent of the Asylum de Bicêtre, which was used simultaneously as not only an asylum, but as an orphanage and a prison. The first picture is a portrait of our good friend Philippe, and the second is a picture of Bicêtre from 1901. (Images found via Wikipedia)
On the US side of things, we'd like to give a shout-out to our girl Dorothea Dix. She was born in Maine but was actually raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. She lobbied state legislatures across the US, and the US Congress to create the first generation of American asylums. (Images found via Wikipedia)
There's a wide range of career opportunities when it comes to Conservation. Some you wouldn't even think of. There are so many that Pyro could only touch on a couple. Wildlife Biologists, Veterinarians that focus on wildlife specifically, conservation scientists, and even zookeepers.
Contrary to popular belief, zoos and Zookeepers are a huge help when it comes to conservation! For example, a lot of zoos participate in the Species Survival Plan which helps to preserve species from extinction by maintaining diverse populations. A recent success story out of Sylmar, California: on April 27, 2022, Wildlife Learning Center's sloth Pauley gave birth to a beautiful baby! (Image courtesy of WLC on Facebook)
Another interesting "career" to look at is anti-poaching rangers and activists. The most poached animal currently is the Pangolin. They're almost like a real-life Sandshrew! These adorable guys are hunted for not only their meat but their scales. (Image ©Sangha Pangolin Project)
The mention of anti-poaching also reminded Moon of an activist group she used to follow, , which focuses on protecting marine wildlife.
