Police policy manuals in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and Tupper Lake legitimize "excited delirium" as a medical diagnosis, even though the diagnosis is not accepted by major health organizations.

Health organizations including the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association reject "excited delirium" due to its vague definition and disproportionate application to Black men who die in police custody.

Thanks to an AIN reader for sending us this photo of the village's Department of Public Works crew in action! By the time we got there, the DPW workers were gone, and so was the basketball hoop. The hoop was featured in a recent AIN video that outlined a variety of issues with parks and roads around the village, none of which are included in the village's capital improvement plan.

BREAKING: The village board approved the $37,500, three-year ROOST contract.

Mayor Clyde Rabideau and trustees Melinda Little, Rich Shapiro, and Tom Catillaz all voted in favor of the contract. Trustee Kelly Brunette was absent.

The proposed contract was included in the meeting agenda packet, which was posted to the village's website late Friday afternoon. The cutoff for submitting public comment for a village meeting is the Thursday before the meeting, meaning the public did not have the opportunity to weigh in on the $37,500 contract before it went up for a vote.

The marketing organization provided no detailed budget outlining how the taxpayer money would be spent. A story will follow.

Earlier this month, Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau took to his mayoral page to claim data presented in the village's Downtown Revitalization Initiative Strategic Investment Plan was “wrong, wrong, wrong.” Meanwhile, the village's Housing Work Group is using that same data to inform its soon-to-be released recommendations on short term rentals and affordable housing. Is Rabideau correct? Is the Housing Work Group using inaccurate data? We contacted people at the state and village level to find out.

A tourism marketing plan was presented by representatives of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism at the last Saranac Lake village board meeting. It was met by praise from some trustees.

ROOST is an organization that relies almost exclusively on public funds. We're taking a look at what village taxpayers are getting for the $12,500 contract, starting with this website audit. The current contract expires July 31.
