India's decision to implement limits on the export of Bangladeshi goods to the North-East was influenced by various statements from the interim government, notably from Chief Adviser Md Yunus, who warned that such restrictions could jeopardize the prosperity of the North-East by cutting off their access to the Bay of Bengal.

Regime members issued repeated threats, particularly following the Pahalgam attacks, suggesting that Dhaka might even consider a move to annex the North-Eastern states. Last year, rallying ex-servicemen in Dhaka voiced strong support for this notion. During a recent visit to Beijing, Yunus emphasized that North-East India is “landlocked,” asserting that Dhaka serves as the “one guardian of the ocean for this entire region.”

During the Sheikh Hasina administration, India forged agreements to provide the North-Eastern states with access to the Bay of Bengal through Chittagong port. This strategy was not only designed to enhance the economic vitality of the North-East but also aimed to boost Bangladesh’s revenue through the royalties generated from the transit of Indian goods, as noted by those knowledgeable about the intricate Indo-Bangladesh relations.
