Hybrid Aesthetics

My main collection aimed to explore this idea of a ‘hybrid identity,’ an identity that reflects the merge of two cultures. Growing up British-Ghanaian, I have felt connected to both cultures. My process aims to continue cultural preservation through wrapping, twisting, tying, and draping across the body inspired by the kente cloth. Further highlighting my community and diasporic aesthetics and aiming to juxtapose Western archetypes, including the classic trench and shirt. Continuing to clash and contrast the two identities.

AMA

Look Inspired by The Ama of Japan, who were traditional female free divers, with a history going back at least 2,000 years. They were known for diving without scuba gear, just holding their breath to collect pearls, seaweed, shellfish, and other treasures from the ocean floor.
