“I am Black. I am female. I am Jewish. And I am proud of every one of those things. I am an entrepreneur. I am a business owner. I am a ski instructor. Those things don’t compute to people, and I don’t care because that is who I am.”

"But there's more to explore in the culinary canon of the Jewish "Festival of Lights" beyond the traditional latkes and sufganiyot that are as essential to celebrating Hanukkah as candles for the hanukkiah.... This year, take a trip back to 13th Century al-Andalus (modern-day Andalusia, Spain) when Jews – and Muslims – both indulged in isfenğ."

Fried foods are the norm when celebrating Hanukkah, and the Sephardic "isfenğ" is no exception, packed with as much history as crunch.

"[T]hrough a string of personal encounters with family members and with history, I eventually came to think that maybe my Black identity was connected to my Jewish identity, as I found common themes between our peoples’ experiences.

What seems to separate us — our skin, our culture, our history — is really what binds the Black and Jewish people."

I rarely saw my Jewish father and knew little about his roots. But I've learned to build my own connections with my ancestry.

"For Karachi’s BenKhald to have battled the odds first to be officially registered as a Jew in Pakistan and perform pilgrimage in Israel on the same passport, is no small feat. Born to a Muslim father and Jewish mother of Iranian origin, Fishel BenKhald is a civil engineer and works at a kosher certification agency. He has been campaigning to preserve the Bani Israel graveyard, the only Jewish cemetery in Karachi, which is in shambles."

In Pakistan, many Jews hide their identity by taking Muslim or Christian faith in official documents. There are less than two hundred Jews left in the country.
