FROM OUR POINT OF VIEW
MALMÖ – THE CITY OF SPRING
Every year at the end of March, Sweden begins to wake up after a long winter rest, it becomes brighter, the sky cracks open, the sun appears and the temperatures get higher. People become happier and more piogly, and everything immediately feels much more positive and happier. Sweden is at its most beautiful in the spring with all the flowers and trees blooming and all the greenery getting going. When we then take the step into May, all the scents come and the journey towards summer begins in earnest and the surest sign that summer is soon here is the big goalball party here in Malmö – Malmö Lady Intercup. This year is the twenty-fourth time that we gather the world's top women's national team for a weekend of strong, intense, exciting and explosive drama in the FIFH hall and this year it is with extra interest that we welcome teams from all corners of the world. It has probably never happened before that the uncertainty has been greater before an edition of the Intercup as most of the world's women's national teams have not won a major championship since we met here last year. A few nations had the honor of playing the Paralympics in Paris last summer, but since the number of teams there has been reduced and no major regional championships have been decided along the way, all nations have had plenty of time to develop their game, their teams and their players and a lot of new stars have also been added. In this way, this year's Intercup will be a bit of a comeback competition where we will get an indication of where the world's women's goalball is heading and in which direction the teams are going. Thus, the competition will also be an opportunity for the teams to position themselves for a coming much more intense championship year where all the major regional championships await until the autumn and they in turn constitute the qualification for the World Cup that will be played next summer. In recent years, we have seen a tremendous development in the women's game and the quality and level of the teams has become more even, so it will be important for them to put themselves in respect for each other before what awaits.
This year's competition will also be the year of comebacks for other reasons. Our greatest champions USA are back after a break and now continue the hunt for their tenth title here in Malmö. Finland has also had a break in participation during the Intercup and they are also one of the most successful nations in our history. They were also the nation that won the very first competition of the Lady Intercup and are thus included on the first page in our history book. Two more nations are back after a long absence and we welcome them very much. Both Germany and Australia add exciting new additions to the starting line.
Even though spring is in the air here in southern Sweden, there is unfortunately still winter darkness in the Swedish women's goalball. There is still no organized Swedish national team even though the Swedish clubs do their best to let all girls play against international opposition, but there is no Swedish national team after a decision in the Parasport Federation and thus no Swedish team in the competition, but on the other hand we are happy that our own association FIFH can muster a very high-octane women's team, which consists of three quarters of Danish national team players, but on a daily basis training here in the United States. Malmö and with great success, the team has participated in major international contexts before.
We work hard before each new year to develop our competition with new elements or with refreshed content and this time we have updated our opening program and our live broadcasts, which we of course hope you will follow with great interest. There you will always get the latest news about the competition, the teams, the players and about the women's goalball. We were the first in the world to create an event around a competition in our brand and we always intend to take new innovative steps forward to continue to be at the forefront of making our sport the energy-rich and gold-edged experience it can be. So welcome to Malmö – the city where it is green, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and the world's best goalball is being played this coming weekend!
