Northern Province has received four new radio frequencies out of the 32 recently advertised by the Independent Broadcasting Authority.

Provincial Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu says the frequencies have been allocated to Mbala, Mporokoso, and two in Kaputa District.

Mr. Mpundu describes the development as a welcome move, saying it will boost communication and information sharing, expand coverage, and allow more voices to participate in telling community stories.

He has also commended the IBA for holding the stakeholders’ meeting, which he says will help prospective applicants understand the licensing process. Mr. Mpundu reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting media growth and innovation in the country.

His remarks were delivered on his behalf by Assistant Secretary Jordan Mwenya.

And speaking at the same event, IBA Board Chairperson Lazarous Luombe encouraged individuals, churches, groups, and community organisations to consider applying for local radio licences to serve their communities.

Mr. Luombe noted that local radio stations play a key role in sharing information on farming, health, education, business, and youth issues, while promoting culture and unity within communities.

He reminded interested parties that the IBA is the authority responsible for issuing radio licences and encouraged the public to use the complaints procedure when aggrieved by the conduct of any radio or television station.

Meanwhile, Kasama Mayor Theresa Kolala has commended the IBA for its transparency in the frequency allocation process and for promoting a responsible and diverse broadcasting environment.

In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Mayor Felix Kangwa, Ms. Kolala said access to radio broadcasting remains critical in improving information flow, civic participation, and community development, especially in rural areas.

HH should replace Kasune - PF

Patriotic Front-PF Kasama Central Constituency Chairperson, THANDIZANI MBEWE, has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to consider replacing Minister of Justice PRINCESS KASUNE.

Mr. MBEWE claims the Justice Minister has been misleading the President, traditional leaders, the church, and the general public, regarding the constitution amendment process and the contents of Bill 7.

He says despite travelling across the country holding meetings purportedly to consult the public, nothing has materialized from this process.

Mr. MBEWE has since called on Minister KASUNE to apologize to the people of Zambia, including traditional leaders, for what he describes as misleading them.

Mr. MBEWE has also demanded that Northern Province Minister and Mpulungu MP LEONARD MBAO, as well as the Northern Province Permanent Secretary BERNARD MBUNDU apologize to the people of Mpulungu, Kasama, and the province at large for allegedly misleading them on Bill 7.

Murdered Liberia president receives decent burial after 45 years

Liberia's former President William Tolbert is set to receive a symbolic reburial on Tuesday, 45 years after he was murdered during a coup and his body believed to be dumped in a mass grave.

Ten days after the president's killing, following trials by a kangaroo court, 13 of his cabinet were stripped, tied to stakes and then executed by a firing squad on a beach next to an army barracks in the capital, Monrovia.

None of the 14 corpses has been found but each man is due to get a state funeral at a ceremony attended by President Joseph Boakai and other dignitaries.

The event is seen as an act of reconciliation and part of a process of the country coming to terms with its violent recent past.

The 12 April 1980 coup in which 28-year-old Sgt Samuel Doe took power ended well over a century of political dominance by the minority Americo-Liberians, the descendants of freed black slaves who had come from the US in the 1800s.

Tolbert's nine-year presidency was marked by growing dissatisfaction with the ethnic inequalities.

His overthrow came at the start of a period of instability in Liberia, culminating in two devastating civil wars, that finally ended in 2003.

Doe himself met a violent death at the hands of rebels in 1990. His reburial in his home town last week was also ordered by the president.

Let us put politics aside and burry ECL with the dignity he deserves - UPND
By Vanguard reporter

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has warned that burying former President Edgar Lungu outside the country would be an affront to Zambia’s sovereignty.

UPND Media Director Mark Simuwe said the nation should rise above political differences and unite in giving the late head of state a dignified and honorable send-off. He urged citizens and political players to put Zambia first during this sensitive period of mourning.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, Mr. Simuwe emphasized that the late president, despite political differences, served the country and deserved a burial that reflects national unity and respect. “It is not just about politics—it is about national identity and preserving our sovereignty,” he said, adding that the burial of any former head of state should happen within the country’s borders.

" It doesn't matter whether they say he was never recognized as president,we all know for a fact that he was our sixth republican president and goverment offices have photos of him to prove that " he says.

Mr. Simuwe credited the strengthening of the Kwacha to President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership and the implementation of sound fiscal policies. He said that international institutions, including Bloomberg, have ranked Zambia’s currency as one of the best-performing globally—a testament to the administration’s economic achievements.

He further highlighted that Zambia has made major strides in energy infrastructure, becoming one of the top five African nations in terms of investment in the sector. According to Mr. Simuwe, the commissioning of a 100-megawatt power plant — second only to Kariba North Bank — reflects the government’s long-term vision for sustainable energy development.

Mr. Simuwe also disclosed that Zambia has started producing and exporting batteries to eight countries, calling it a milestone in industrial growth. He added that increased investments in health, education, and public service recruitment are transforming the country’s economic and social outlook. “We are not just talking; we are delivering,” he said.

He stated that many of the achievements have been made possible through the government’s tireless efforts to attract investment, including signing several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that are now yielding results in key sectors.

Commenting on the zesco load management Mr Simuwe says the electricity company is able to supply 24 hour daily power supply but this may lead to a power black out hence it is rationing the use of water and the recent experienced power outages was due to works at the Maamba power plant.

Charly Musonda has announced his retirement from professional football at 28.

He joined Chelsea at the age of 15 in 2012, but persistent injuries prevented him from fulfilling his potential at the highest level. He eventually left the Blues in 2022.

His emergence in the Premier League sparked excitement among many Zambians, but the son of former Zambian international Charles Musonda opted to represent Belgium instead of the Chipolopolo Boys.

Trump global aid cuts risk 14 million deaths in five years, report says

(BBC) Donald Trump's move to cut most of the US funding towards foreign humanitarian aid could cause more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, according to research published in The Lancet medical journal.

A third of those at risk of premature deaths are children, the research finds.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in March that President Trump's administration had cancelled over 80% of all programmes at the US Agency for International Development, or USAID.

"For many low- and middle-income countries, the resulting shock would be comparable in scale to a global pandemic or a major armed conflict," Davide Rasella, who co-authored the Lancet report, said in a statement.

The funding cuts "risk abruptly halting - and even reversing - two decades of progress in health among vulnerable populations," added Rasella, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.

The report comes as dozens of world leaders are meeting in the Spanish city of Seville this week for a United Nations-led aid conference, the biggest one in a decade.

Looking back over data from 133 nations, the team of researchers estimated that USAID funding had prevented 91 million deaths in developing countries between 2001 and 2021.

They also used modelling to project how funding being slashed by 83% – the figure announced by the US government earlier this year – could affect death rates.

The cuts could lead to more than 14 million avoidable deaths by 2030, the projections found. That number included over 4.5 million children under the age of five – or around 700,000 child deaths a year.

The Trump administration, previously led by billionaire Elon Musk's cost-cutting initiative, aimed to shrink the federal workforce. It has also accused USAID of supporting liberal projects.

The US, by far the world's largest humanitarian aid provider, has operated in more than 60 countries, largely through contractors.

IF WE DON’T BURY ECL IN ZAMBIA, THE WORLD WILL LAUGH AT US – HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has reiterated the importance of burying Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, in his home country.

He warned that failure to do so would subject Zambia to ridicule on the global stage.

The President made the remarks while addressing traditional leaders from Central Province, who expressed their desire for the late President’s remains to be repatriated and laid to rest in Zambia.

President Hichilema emphasized that the sentiments of the Chiefs reflect the collective wishes of the nation, and assured them that the government is making every effort to reach an amicable agreement with the Lungu family.

He noted that disagreements are common during one’s lifetime even among family members but says such differences should be set aside in death.

He adds that there is only one country Edgar Lungu called home and that is Zambia.

He has since urged the traditional leaders to engage their fellow Chiefs across the country to express a unified position on the matter.

Edgar Lungu died on 5th June in South Africa where he was receiving treatment and upto now has not been buried due to the standoff between the family and government .

BREAKING: The Economic Crimes Court has upheld the conviction and sentence slapped on former deputy Inspector General of Police Charity Katanga.

Katanga was handed a 3-year sentence by a lower court on a charge of possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.

But she appealed the sentence which has since been upheld.

She was accused of possessing of 10 Higer buses valued at over K26 million, which were found to be proceeds of crime.

Following her conviction and sentencing, Katanga was granted bail pending the outcome of her appeal.

The court found that Katanga failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove that the properties in question were legally acquired.

She will now serve her three-year sentence beginning today since she was out on bail.
