Northern Province has received four new radio frequencies out of the 32 recently advertised by the Independent Broadcasting Authority.
Provincial Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu says the frequencies have been allocated to Mbala, Mporokoso, and two in Kaputa District.
Mr. Mpundu describes the development as a welcome move, saying it will boost communication and information sharing, expand coverage, and allow more voices to participate in telling community stories.
He has also commended the IBA for holding the stakeholders’ meeting, which he says will help prospective applicants understand the licensing process. Mr. Mpundu reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting media growth and innovation in the country.
His remarks were delivered on his behalf by Assistant Secretary Jordan Mwenya.
And speaking at the same event, IBA Board Chairperson Lazarous Luombe encouraged individuals, churches, groups, and community organisations to consider applying for local radio licences to serve their communities.
Mr. Luombe noted that local radio stations play a key role in sharing information on farming, health, education, business, and youth issues, while promoting culture and unity within communities.
He reminded interested parties that the IBA is the authority responsible for issuing radio licences and encouraged the public to use the complaints procedure when aggrieved by the conduct of any radio or television station.
Meanwhile, Kasama Mayor Theresa Kolala has commended the IBA for its transparency in the frequency allocation process and for promoting a responsible and diverse broadcasting environment.
In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Mayor Felix Kangwa, Ms. Kolala said access to radio broadcasting remains critical in improving information flow, civic participation, and community development, especially in rural areas.
