The water of Hajj: A simple illustrated guide to Zamzam ...The history of the Aab-e-Zamzam (Zamzam water) begins with Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) leaving his wife Hajar (Hagar) and infant son Ismail (Ishmael) in the barren desert of Mecca, as commanded by God. When their water ran out, Hajar frantically ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times searching for water. Miraculously, water burst forth from the ground near Ismail's feet, and Hajar exclaimed "Zamzam!" ("Stop! Stop!") to contain the flow, giving the well its name. This sacred well, located near the Kaaba in Mecca, has never run dry, providing water for pilgrims for millennia, and its rediscovery and management by Abd al-Muttalib, Prophet Muhammad's grandfather, solidified its importance.
