☀️Sunshine & Watermelon 🍉!
🔠Scrabble & Wolfgang 🎹

I've been under the weather for several days, and so our school days haven't been quite as I had hoped they'd be these past couple of weeks.

In the midst of all this though, I can't help but count my blessings. I am thankful to see how the children are managing. They actually like each other 😄, seek each other's company and look out for each other when Mama is unwell. This is not to say they don't have their not so pretty moments, but today, we're focusing on the positives 😄.

I snuck these pictures of them basking in the sun ⛱️ and chit-chatting this afternoon, and then challenging each other a little while ago to a game of Scrabble while enjoying some classical music.

Can we just say not all reading is necessarily good reading? The kind of books we put before our children can either ignite or douse their love of learning. Do you know about 'living books'?

Below are some characteristics of living books listed in an article on https://simplycharlottemason.com/ . You can check out their website for more information on living books and other great topics.

- It’s usually written by one author who has a passion for the subject, rather than a committee that has been hired to put something together.

- It is usually written in what Charlotte called a “literary style.” Listen for a narrative or a conversational tone. It will sound like someone telling you a story or chatting with you in everyday language across the kitchen table.

- It touches your emotions and fires your imagination. You can usually picture in your mind’s eye what is happening as you read, and you begin to feel a personal connection with the person or animal or event that you’re reading about.

- It is well-written, not twaddle. Twaddle is dumbed-down language, often presented in short, choppy sentences.

Unpacking Unschooling

On today's episode, we have an enlightening conversation with Adesola ( .id ), an unschooling mom of two, on unschooling and what it looks like for her family. We try to answer all the questions you may have about this less trodden path (especially in our African context), that more and more homeschoolers are taking.

Remind yourself of this often this week. Wishing you a most wonderful week with your children!

08/03/2022

Dear Homeschool Parent,

Do you get caught up in 'school' mode sometimes and just have to get that list of subjects checked off, no matter what it takes? I am sorry to say I do all too often, and I'm here to encourage you today to relax a bit 😄.
It's difficult to unlearn habits you've had and seen around you for so long, but we can adjust and maximize the benefits of educating our children at home!
To some homeschoolers, most days are just like school brought home, and that's fine if that's your goal. My conversations with many homeschool parents however tell me otherwise. It sounds like most of us long for a more relaxed and enjoyable learning experience for, and with our children; the kind that moves learning from the category of 'chore' or 'must -do', to that of interesting and exciting! This doesn't seem to come easy though.

On a recent morning, I found my LO busy reading one of his 'Cat in the Hat's Learning Library' books on trees. I said to him, "Honey, it's time for your work. We need to do spelling", but he wasn't really interested and asked to please finish reading his book. I asked a second time some minutes later and got a similar response, and right before I asked a third time, it dawned on me that I was in my 'check off the box' mode and had to rethink what I was doing.
Yes! It's important to have structure and schedules and all that, and yes, kids need to know that they sometimes have to do things even when they don't feel very much like it because that's life, but this morning was not that moment.

My son was excited about what he was learning and what was I about to quench all that for? After all, isn't the best way to learn spelling through reading 😄? So I readjusted and got into learning about the trees with him. He got some more books to read and learnt a LOT of new and exciting things that day. We didn't check off Math or Spelling, but he had an interesting and exciting day and honestly, it was a nice day for Mama too! So, what do you do to ensure learning stays exciting in your home, and 'school' does not become a bunch of subjects that the kids can't wait to be done with so they can play😆?

🔸New Episode 🔸

On today's episode, we continue our insightful conversation with Amma as she shares different ways in which she manages homeschooling three young children while taking care of a baby. You are sure to learn a thing or two, so join us!

21/02/2022

Reading this article (link in stories) really made me sad☹️. It made wonder whether it's worth the price these children (and parents) have to pay in order to get an education. It might be worth it, but it certainly feels wrong. Do you have a choice when you live in a city like this? Maybe not, but maybe you do.

It involves taking a big step outside the rolling tide and really considering what your options are. That's exactly what our guest on the podcast last week, Amma, did (check link in bio to listen).
She shared how stressors just like this contributed largely to her decision to homeschool. If you haven't listened to that episode yet, be sure to do so and share it with someone who may need it.

Now, I do realize that homeschool may not be feasible in everyone's circumstances or at certain times in life, but I do know that it could work for a good number of people who find themselves in this stressful 'Lagos type' situation, if they'll only stop to think carefully about it.

A final thought: Regularly consider your final destination, and ask yourself if the path you're on today is the best one to lead you there. If not, make a change.
