WESTMORELAND MAN CONVICTED OF RA**NG A CHILD, OTHER SEXUAL ABUSE OFFENSES
Today, following a 3-day jury trial in Sumner County Criminal Court, Assistant District Attorneys General Nathan Nichols and Tara Wyllie secured convictions against Skye Clinton Sweat, (age 40) of Westmoreland, for multiple counts of r**e of a child and other child sexual abuse-related offenses.
During the trial, Generals Nichols and Wyllie presented evidence that, in May of 2024, a 9-year-old girl reported to her mother that Sweat had shown her pornographic videos on his phone and touched her inappropriately. The victim's mother immediately took her to the Westmoreland Police Department to report the incident. During a subsequent forensic interview at Ashley's Place, the victim disclosed graphic details of sexual acts performed on her by Sweat between 2023 and 2024. Det. David Hightower of the Westmoreland Police Department presented Sweat's case to the Sumner County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment against him.
The Jury convicted Sweat of 4 counts of r**e of a child, 6 counts of aggravated sexual battery and 2 counts of exploitation of a minor. He faces up to 316 years in prison, without the possibility of probation, parole, or early release. Immediately after the jury returned its verdict, Criminal Court Judge Dee David Gay revoked Sweat's bond. He will remain in the Sumner County Jail pending sentencing.
In announcing Sweat's conviction, District Attorney General Dean said the following:
This conviction would not have been possible without the bravery of the victim and excellent investigation undertaken by the Westmoreland Police Department. We also appreciate work of Ashley's Place and OurKids Clinic, who collected valuable evidence in this case as well as the support provided to the prosecutors and victim by Victim Witness Coordinators Sally Ann Pirtle and Jennifer Woodard.
The safety of Sumner County's children is one of my top priorities as District Attorney General and my office will remain committed to seeing that those who harm children are brought to justice and held accountable for their crimes.
