Bringing your little ones to church service? 🤔
We truly believe it's a net good for them to get accustomed to the environment week after week, and this is a topic we feel isn't discussed enough in church circles!
Our journey with Charlie (now 4 years old) has had many iterations: from infant feeding breaks to louder cries, and even him trying to run to the podium or instruments! We've navigated what many parents experience.
But here's why consistency is so valuable, especially for ages 0-3:
Children at this tender age often don't get active training in church childcare, which can sometimes be "all play" and not active learning. Instead, by keeping them with you in service, you allow them to:
Experience the worship and sermons, getting used to the rhythm of service.
Learn to comport themselves and understand the church environment.
I know many parents develop anxiety about their child's misbehavior in church. But I gently suggest:
Don't let the fear of a rambunctious toddler keep you from church.
If your church offers 0-3 childcare, consider not patronizing it every week. Bring your child into the service!
This isn't about "lazy parenting"! You still need to be an active parent in service – taking them out to calm down, discipline, or train them if needed. This is how they learn and grow, just like in any other environment. Don't be discouraged if you have to step out; it's part of the process!
In our personal experience, consistently bringing Charlie has accustomed him to the environment. It’s a combination of regular exposure and active parenting that yields results.
