In conjunction with the national launch of ‘Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair,’ President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. distributes 25 kilos of rice, totaling PhP2.5 million in value, to 2,000 beneficiaries belonging to the indigent families and indigenous peoples of Camarines Sur in a ceremony at the University of Saint Anthony (USANT) Forum Building in Iriga City on September 23, 2023.
This initiative aims to cushion the effects of the staple’s price increase amid a rice shortage. It seeks to benefit the most vulnerable sectors by directly purchasing rice varieties from local millers in the Province.
House Representative Miguel Luis ‘Migz’ Villafuerte of the 5th Congressional District of Camarines Sur plans to discuss with the President the existing rice processing facility in Tambo, Pamplona and the ongoing construction of another post-processing facility in Casugad, Bula. These facilities will serve as ‘bagsakan centers’ for rice farmers to sell their produce at a competitive price by implementing a set and fixed price of PhP17 per kilo. This initiative would greatly assist local farmers especially during the typhoon season.
Camarines Sur serves as the rice granary of the Bicol Region. In 2022, the Department of Agriculture (DA) included the Province in the country’s top 10 list of provinces producing hybrid rice in terms of volume at 128,514 metric tons.
