Repost from : Fascinated by a 2000 unsolved local murder, Susan Galbreath decided to become a citizen sleuth. With the help of a British journalist, the Mayfield, KY homemaker identified Quincy Cross and five others of kidnapping and killing Jessica Currin, then ra**ng her lifeless body and setting it on fire. While the press loved the story of an amateur detective cracking the case, serious problems were overlooked. The theory of the crime changed, evidence was circumstantial, and interrogation techniques were coercive. Witnesses have recanted their statements, and even Jessica’s father thinks the wrong man is in prison. But what the world didn’t know at the trial was that Galbreath had a reason to lead police to Cross and away from their original suspect.

“Bone Valley Season 3 | Graves County” from Lava for Good asks whether the made-for-movie tale of an average citizen solving a murder is too good to be true and the consequences of that fiction. Host Maggie Freleng picks apart the inconsistencies in the investigation and actions of investigators and journalists too eager to believe the information Galbreath was selling.

Susan Galbreath wasn’t a cop, a lawyer, or a trained investigator—but police treated her like one. Her home-grown “investigation” supplied key leads, interviews, even DIY evidence collection that the cops folded into their case. Emails and testimony show she worked closely with the family of another credible suspect, pushed investigators toward Quincy Cross, and fought to keep her own files out of the defense’s hands. When law enforcement leans on an amateur and calls it evidence, that’s not due diligence. It’s sloppy police work, and it puts justice at risk.

Soon after Jessica Currin’s death, Victoria Caldwell suddenly changed her story - implicating two entirely different suspects. But after Mayfield Police botched that investigation, attention shifted when Susan Galbreath, eager for her own sense of purpose, began digging into the case with the help of a BBC reporter.

Susan wasn’t a detective. She was a local who leaned on her relationships in Mayfield, pressing vulnerable people for information and feeding it back to police. Her personal quest for fulfillment came at a devastating cost: the wrongful conviction of Quincy Cross.

Chapter 3 of BONE VALLEY: GRAVES COUNTY dives into the Kentucky Bureau of Investigation's bungling of the case. They pushed flimsy stories and conducted off-camera interrogations of young women to secure the conviction of Quincy Cross despite having ZERO physical evidence. And the prosecution? They built their case on the foundations laid by Susan Galbraith—a local busybody who made it her business to turn gossip into "evidence."

People are talking about BONE VALLEY SEASON 3: GRAVES COUNTY. This season is hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maggie Freleng, who takes us to a small Kentucky town where the horrific murder of 18-year-old Jessica Currin rocked a tight-knit community. Along the way, she teases out a complicated web of rumors and lies—a made-up story that led to the conviction of a man who Jessica's own family believes is innocent.

Six years after Jessica Currin’s murder, the Kentucky Attorney General’s office stepped in. But instead of fixing the bungled investigation, they leaned on the theories of self-appointed “citizen investigator” Susan Galbreath. Their unorthodox interrogations produced shaky confessions that led to the conviction of Quincy Cross—despite the lack of credible evidence.
