Large areas of farmland around the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that are officially classed as contaminated now appear to be safe to use for growing food, as surveys show radiation levels have fallen below the levels regarded as unsafe according to Ukrainian regulations.

Changing the status of this land could help compensate for farmland lost as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A viral photograph on Reddit claimed to show one of the first photographs taken at Chernobyl after the explosion of the nuclear reactor in Ukraine on April 26, 1986.

The post claimed it was shot 14 hours afterward. Based on a number of accounts, it was also not the only shot of the site taken on April 26.

Igor Kostin, as described by numerous news accounts, shot the picture in question, and by his own retelling was among the first photographers at the scene hours after the disaster.

Moscow said Kyiv was looking to accuse Russia of violating the Convention on Nuclear Safety during what Moscow calls the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Researchers Pablo Burraco and Germán Orizaola went to Chernobyl in 2016 and found Eastern tree frogs with an "unusual black tint."

This species is typically bright green. They learned that the frogs in the area evolved "pitch black skin" to protect themselves against ionizing radiation in the area.

Fifteen generations of frogs have been born since the worst nuclear accident in history, and may be evolving a resistance to radiation.
