What goes on under the hood in Jowsey Jones’s comedy mind? We sat down with our favourite crackpot author and asked the big questions about his debut SFF farce, Blazing Coffins. Here’s what he said:
The Two Vics: Jowsey, why on earth do you write this stuff? Isn’t it bad for your health?
Jowsey Jones: It’s probably worse for my health if I don’t let it out. All these puns are rattling around in there, kicking each other in the shins, and to be honest, it gets quite loud. After a while I learned to rope them together into some semblance of a story then open the gates and push them out screaming into the world. A bit like the first arena scene in Gladiator, really. A lot of sniffy people say they really don’t like this kind of humour, especially if it’s laced with sarcasm and puns. But in my experience there are plenty who do—there’s a lot of therapeutic benefit in a good old guffaw at something truly ludicrous. Think back to the stage farces of old, or the loopy slapstick of silent movies. Sure, they aren’t Shakespeare, but they’re cathartic—a way to let off steam after a crummy day. Who doesn’t need a good hoot on a regular basis?
