“helping with one hand, with a camera in the other.”

This statement captures the motivations of many scammers and so called K-9 Handlers that responded to Texas. They showed up at the invitation of random organizations that have no credibility (or no invitation at all) and their only contribution was to post pictures and videos to social media to drive donations and get likes and praise from their social media followers.

IF YOU NEED TO BEG FOR DONATIONS TO GO, THEN DON'T GO. That money is much better spent for the people who've lost all of their physical belongings and their loved ones.

Posting pictures and videos of people's destroyed vehicles and homes with no regard for the suffering of the residents, but someone on social media told me how I was a hero, so all is well.

Hey, everyone look at this amazing adventure that I just had, it was so much fun! Please like and follow!!

Little to any mention of the 137+ lives lost.
The weddings that will have no father to give away the bride, the babies that will never meet their grandmother, the children that will never have another birthday party, the holidays without the life of the party, the Sunday morning brunch with a best friend, the empty bedrooms in the home that's a memorial to a person who's never coming back, the parents that will never be called Mom or Dad again.
No mention of that, but hey social media told me I was so incredibly brave so my heart is full.

How can we as K-9 handlers claim to be there to help, but truly our primary motivation is to show the world how great we are. Many have shown their true colors. The impulses of the heart are displayed on their social media pages. Praise is essential, and without praise why would I do SAR? So I post a destroyed house, and watch the comments come in on FB telling me I'm great (dopamine dump) so then I must post more so I continue feeling good about myself.

This undoubtedly happened in NC as well, I'm sure you can check many of the so called handlers FB page and see the same non-sense as well, and it will continue to happen at future disasters.

The question I have for the people who are doing this the right way, and for the right reasons....

Why do we allow people to be apart of our community when we see them do this? Why not saying anything? What is the limit, some idiot "handler" posting human remains on FB?

If we remain silent, it will never stop.

After the July 4 disaster, independent content creators arrived in the Hill Country alongside news reporters, marking an uneasy merging of social media and journalism.

Heather Stieler joins us on HFA to discuss three types of K-9 Training Log software that are available for dog handlers to use in order to track their training logs

Heather calls the Texas Hill Country home but was raised all over the US. She currently works from home as a Software Specialist. Heather became interested in SAR as a way to serve her community in a fun and exciting way that also included her Malinois’ Ren and Misha. Heather and K9 Ren are a certified live area/air scent search team through IPWDA. Heather and K9 Misha are also a certified human remains detection team through IPWDA.

During this episode we do a break down of three currently available Detection dog training software (Balto, RescueDogs, and Dogbase) and perform a comparison of each software. We walk through some of the Pros/Cons of each software and discuss what makes each solution distinctive.

If you are looking for a new and improved way to track your dog's training, this is an episode that you do not want to miss.

***Please take the time to visit the website of each software and decide which solution works best for your personal needs.

Hello friends,

I wanted to give a sincere Thank you for supporting this podcast and for the guests who have volunteered their time to be interviewed.

When I started the podcast, I was unsure if anyone would actually listen to it, and I'm happy to say that we had nearly 10K streams in 2024!!!

Although I have not posted a new episode in a while, rest assured I have some great content recorded and on the way. I also have some great topics that I plan on covering in 2025.

God's greatest blessings to you all, and thank you for sharing this podcast with your SAR friends.

As always, safe searching

Michelle Metzner joins us on HFA for the second time to discuss troubleshooting the Recall/Refind for Live Find dogs. Michelle has been a SAR handler for over 30 years and has fielded multiple search dogs over the past 3 decades. Michelle is a leader on the K-9 Emergency Response Team based in Wisconsin and is also a K-9 Handler for Wisconsin Task Force 1. Additionally, she has served as a lead K-9 evaluator for the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) for many years.

In part two with Michelle we focus on troubleshooting the Recall/Refind for Live Find dogs and how to work through some of the common issues that handlers face with their dogs. For this episode we took actual questions that Michelle has received from K-9 handlers and listened to Michelle troubleshoot how she would work through fixing the issues being faced by handlers.

If you are teaching your dog the Recall/Refind or are having issues with any part of the behavior chain this is definitely an episode that you will want to listen to.

Have you had the opportunity to listen to the episode with Dr. Mark Marsolais about the screening tool co-developed with David Brownell.

I'm curious if any of your teams are using the Brownell-Marsolais screening tool, and if so how predictive has it been in selecting successful SAR candidates? Are you saving resources by reducing time spent on less promising K-9 candidates?🤔

There have been 3 companies that I can recall that have launched apps for SAR K-9 training logs over the last 6 months. I'm curious if ya'll would be interested in hearing interviews with creators of these various apps where we discuss features and pricing. I'm on the fence about it, but if there is enough interest I can schedule the interviews.
Let me know your thoughts.

One of our most popular guest is instructing a seminar in August. Make sure to stay tuned for Part 2 with Michelle!

We are excited to be able to host Michelle Metzner this summer for a live-find area seminar! Michelle is passionate about ensuring that a search K9 clearly understands and is proficient in performing it's trained final response, whether that be a recall/refind or a bark & hold. This should be a very educational and fun seminar!

Keep an eye out on our social media for the application!
