19 years, it took the NAVY 19 years to find a real replacement for the long range air to air capability the F-14 had.
The Tomcat was retired in 2006.

F-14B Vertical Stall Recovery, as taught by Former F-14 Pilot “Nasty” Manazir
Procedure:
Start Level flight at 350-400 kn
15,000 ft
Go Mil Power
4 G pull to Vertical
Hold 90 degree climb
At 100 kn, controls neutral (hands on lap, feet off the pedals)
Recover at 250 kn
Rear Admiral "Nasty" Manazir, is a USN Retired F-14 Pilot, Top Gun graduate and F-14 Instructor.

Mosquitoes flew under de cover of night deep into enemy territory during ww2 targeting German night fighter and their airfields.
