“Hazmat bottles” it’s all the craze, but is it a good craze? Nick here from the podcast and I have said way too many times how proof improves the flavor, but is there a limit to that? I have had the opportunity to have these two bottles back to back and, while yes they are different in many ways, proof is the biggest one.

Here is what I can say, higher proof doesn’t always mean better flavor. While they Wyatt Earp is amazing, there is this rough back of the throat almost itchiness that comes from it. Now, half an ounce or less and it’s great! More and it’s well more. The old Forrester on the other hand is right at the perfect proof to flavor ratio. It’s dark and rich and not harsh. It’s a thinker for sure!

All this to say, no matter the bottle or store pick, proof point is not the end all be all. Just like age is not the end all be all. When shopping for bottles ask if they give samples. Samples will help. 99% of the time if given a sample, you will buy!

Howdy! It’s Steve Heyman again for whiskey Wednesday! Decided to kill my bottle of Redbreast Whiskey tawny port cask edition! I sleep on Irish. I have heard it described as one noted, but a hell of a good note! It’s 92 proof, and tastes right for that. It’s a bit of an odd drink. Very Irish on the front end and while swishing it around. But once you swallow, some of the port dryness comes through and the aftertaste has a wine like mouthfeel.

Howdy, it’s Steve Heyman. One of the best parts of being is a whiskey club is this. The random samples you get from people. Yet it’s not something I think about grabbing very often. Tonight I’m trying the May club month bottle that I missed, red line single barrel Barbados rum finish. So much fun to try new things and not have the marketing to sway you on flavor. Cheers all!

It drinks below its proof (119 proof) at closer to 100-105. But it has a pleasant bite at the start, which then smooths out then jumps once more with a punch of vanilla, then into the finish where the rum comes through. Very sweet on the finish (Nick Berkey do you remember your thoughts on this, I feel like it may be too sweet for you?) I like it a lot, and it fits well with our transition month from finishes on to this year of single barrels!

Howdy all! It’s Steve. As listeners will know, I’m a big fan of American single malt. This is a top 3 bottle for me, and it’s almost gone. I will miss this once gone, but if StilL 630 Distillery still has it I’ll be getting another bottle!

subtle smoke with dark cherry notes. bottle says the barley is smoked with cherrywood and that comes through. if i was tasting it blind i may say it was a wine finsh. the flavor is mostly in the middle with a short finish, like smoke it hits you and then disapates.

We finish our craft distillery series with a bottle off an island from South Carolina. Now, as big fans of Hilton Head, we got excited about this bottle and the idea of whiskey being made near there, but we also had our reservations. This bottle was a nice surprise for us and also threw some curve balls our way. Join us on today’s episode of the Whiskey Chasers Podcast as we dive into a new distillery and bottle to us from Daufuskie Island Distillery.

New Episode! "Jimmy Red and Blockade Runner!"

We continue with our series on craft distilleries producing bottles that are packed with flavor with a bottle out of South Carolina. Jimmy Red, coming out of High Wire Distilling Co., is a bottle that has started to gain some attraction lately and peaked our interest, so when we found a bottle we had to get it to try! We have had a couple of different types of red corn on the podcast and we can confidently say none of them have been the same, but yet they have all packed a unique and friendly flavor. Join us for today’s episode of the Whiskey Chasers Podcast as we enjoy some blockade runner from Cornell & Diehl, Inc and as we get excited about this bottle, the red corn they use, and the fact this bottle is coming out of the east coast.
