THE NATIONAL BANK OF ETHIOPIA 🇪🇹 : A Landmark of Modernization by Henri Chomette
During the last decade of Emperor Haile Selassie’s rule, Addis Ababa saw a boom in modernization, attracting international architects like Arturo Mezzedimi, Henri Chomette, and Zalman Enav. Among the major projects was the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), designed by Chomette in 1965. A student of Le Corbusier, Chomette’s design combined modernist elements with local materials, which helped symbolize Ethiopia’s economic strength and independence.

Chomette’s work on the NBE building was part of a broader effort to modernize the city. His designs, along with others like the OAU headquarters and French Lycée Guebre-Mariam, helped shape Addis Ababa into a symbol of Africa’s new modern era. The NBE remains a key landmark in the city’s architectural history.

A glimpse of Addis Ababa in 1986 during the rule of the Provisional Military Administrative Council (PMAC), commonly known as the Derg, which seized power after overthrowing Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974. Led by Mengistu Haile Mariam, the Derg governed Ethiopia for 17 years until it was finally overthrown by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in 1991.

*Ethiopian Woman appreciation post!🇪🇹
Ethiopian women have always been the backbone of the nation, playing pivotal roles throughout history. From Queen Sheba, the mother of Menelik I Ethiopia’s first emperor according to the Kebra Nagast to Empress Tayitu, whose leadership was crucial in Ethiopia’s victory over Italy in the First Italo Ethiopian War, Ethiopian women have shaped the country’s destiny.

Beyond the frontlines, they have held their households together, taking on responsibilities from a young age raising children, managing families, and facing countless challenges. Yet, through it all, they continue to move forward with strength, grace, and resilience, always wearing a beautiful smile.

Today, we honor and appreciate all Ethiopian women across the world. Your strength, love, and sacrifices do not go unnoticed.

You are loved and appreciated!

Happy International Women’s Day – March 8!

The Return of the Lion of Judah🇪🇹🦁
The Lion of Judah Statue, the traditional emblem of the Ethiopian emperors, was originally erected in 1930 near Leghar Train Station in Addis Ababa to commemorate the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I. The statue features the crowned Lion of Judah holding a scepter, and its pedestal includes portraits of four significant Ethiopian figures: Emperor Haile Selassie I, who commissioned the statue; Emperor Menelik II, who led Ethiopia to victory at the Battle of Adwa; Empress Zewditu, Ethiopia’s first female ruler in modern history; and Ras Makonnen, a key military leader and father of Haile Selassie.

During the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1936), Italian forces looted the statue and took it to Rome, where it was placed under the Dogali Obelisk, which commemorates the Italian soldiers who died in the Battle of Dogali during the First Italo-Ethiopian War, displaying it as a trophy of colonial conquest. However, following diplomatic efforts led by Emperor Haile Selassie I, the statue was finally returned in 1960, reclaiming its rightful place in Addis Ababa. It now stands as a testament to Ethiopia’s triumph over colonial oppression and as a symbol of national pride and independence.

The Ethiopian Highland Motor rally 🇪🇹🏁 1965-1973
The Ethiopian Highland Motor Rally began in 1965 and was held annually until 1973, with Addis Ababa as the starting point. The race covered up to 5,000 km of tough terrain and attracted drivers from multiple countries, including Italy, Germany, and the UK, who raced cars like the Fiat 125 and Ford Cortina. It was discontinued after 1973 due to political changes during the Derg regime.
