Just another Saturday at The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education at University of San Diego. Can’t say enough great things about Perla Myers.

The entire DNA of Cloudcast is elevating students. Every single show we create and produce has students involved in some way, whether it is as Associate Producers or even hosting and creating shows through our “VOICE” program (Iloveschoolcast). When clients work with us, they are powering up students!

These four students have created their own podcast - Voices of Impact - framed by our camp program with USD (ImPactful Sandbox). On Saturday they interviewed Haney Hong to discuss “Good Jobs & Strong Economies” and how to build them! It was a great conversation! Thank you, Haney!

One of the things I’ve learned about economics. Supply often creates its own demand. Now our plan is to get our VOICE program and curriculum in as many schools as possible. We have supply and the students will provide the demand. They love learning how to empower their voices, communicate, work as team, research, meet deadlines, overcome challenges, record, produce, and distribute their content. Life skills.

Amazing things happen when doors get opened. Our Iloveschoolcast collaboration with The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education is special for many reasons (I’m biased). After being inspired at the “Impactful Sandbox” last summer, new friendships were formed and the students decided to move forward and create their own show with Cloudcast and Jacobs. The students asked to meet every Saturday at 3pm. If they want to work, we work. Even when I was at family weekend or in Coronado with Ava Parisi, they made sure I joined them. That is called passion, purpose, and work ethic.

If they want to work, we work.

This is just one example of how to engage the digitally native generation of thinkers and doers, fueled by their passion to make the world work better.

Many (mostly my east coast friends) ask my favorite spot in San Diego. It is not any of the usual places. Today I was a zoom with a school collaborator in Philly and the question came up.

Below is absolutely one of my faves. Jonas Salk was brilliant beyond science. The picture below was by DESIGN. Happens twice per year.

“Every day, do something a little better”.

It’s that simple. Attributing this one today to Mike Grgich, the legendary winemaker who shook the world and rocked the French food and wine establishment in 1976. This was his daily mindset.

He has passed, but Grgich Hills Estate and his legacy live on. A salute to excellence, which is a daily grind, the love of the minutiae, and the never ending belief that good enough never is. I’d like to think we’re doing this at Cloudcast, Iloveschoolcast, and Asymmetrical Evolution, but we can always be better!

And, YOU get to pick what the “something” is to improve each day. It might be improving your work skills, life skills, relationship skills or even your downtime skills.

So, yesterday my daughter said, in a nutshell, “Dad, you think differently.”

It was such a compliment - and fortunately she meant it that way. We were just having our typical random convo bouncing from idea to thought to something we find amusing (such as last mile distribution with VEHO). But it also turned into a conversation about the importance of “no box” or bare minimum, out of the box thinking (a concept I don’t really like). How do we get more young folks to think differently? How do we infuse critical thinking skills?

It’s one of the reasons I’m passionate about the “Impactful Sandbox” program between the The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education and Cloudcast / Iloveschoolcast.

WE just HAVE to infuse the ability to think differently into as many young people as possible. The world has many challenges, none of which will be solved with thought stasis.

On this Monday, I’m encouraging everyone to think differently about some challenge, some issue, some matter. Try and see it entirely differently and the answer might always have been there. It’s hard to be a subjective participant and an objective observer, but give it a try.

Let’s make this the beginning of the National Think Differently Day.

When I say there is a dim future without SMART KIDS, I refer not to simplistic, constrained, and easily manipulated measurement of “smart” as in academic tests. No way, no way.
