Respect isn’t one big moment.

It’s the everyday choices we make in how we speak, listen and show up for each other.

In this short clip, Mike Whitney shares what respect looks like in real life and how simple actions can help create safer, healthier relationships and communities. His message is a reminder that we all have influence, and small changes in how we treat each other can have a big impact.

Here are a few ways to put respect into practice:
• listen without interrupting
• speak about others with kindness
• check in when something feels “off”
• use humour that doesn’t put people down
• back your mates to do better

Violence doesn’t start with violence - it starts with attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that go unchallenged.

In this video, Benny Turland speaks openly about mental health, mateship and the importance of standing up against disrespect and domestic and family violence.

His story reminds us that honest conversations save lives, reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking.

Being a community upstander isn’t about stepping into danger or calling people out.

It’s about knowing how to take simple, safe actions when something doesn’t feel right – and supporting others in ways that build safer, more respectful communities.

That’s why we’re encouraging our community to join the Allies Against Violence – Community Upstander Workshop on Saturday 6 December in Randwick.

This free session is for people of all genders who want to:
• recognise early signs of disrespect or harm
• learn practical tools to respond safely
• support mates, colleagues and family
• help prevent violence long before it begins

It’s a welcoming, practical workshop designed for real-life situations we all recognise.

If you’ve ever thought, “I want to help… I’m just not always sure how,” this is for you.

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the beginning of 16 Days of Activism.

At We’re Better Than That, we believe that ending gender-based violence starts with all of us — women, men and gender-diverse people — choosing to show up, speak up and support each other.

In this clip, Hoppo from Bondi Rescue shares a powerful message about the role men can play in supporting each other to show respect, challenge harmful attitudes and step in early. These everyday conversations between men matter. They change culture long before violence occurs.

We invite our community to join us over the next 16 days as we highlight simple, positive actions we can all take to build safer, more respectful relationships and communities.

Small steps make a difference. And together, we are better than that.

As a role model at the Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club Bruce “Hoppo” Hopkins knows the importance of treating everyone with respect.“We’re Better Than That” is a ...
