Witnessing the Great Migration in Tanzania was one of the most awe-inspiring moments of our lives. Over 1.5 million wildebeest (along with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle) make this epic, circular journey every year between the Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing lands 🌿
What surprised us most? It’s actually zebra who lead the way. Their memory helps guide the herd to known water sources, while the wildebeest follow in massive, thunderous waves. Together, they create one of the most iconic wildlife spectacles on Earth.
And then there was the moment we’ll never forget: sitting in silence as a group of lionesses stalked a herd of wildebeest. The tension in the air was unreal. You could feel the weight of instinct, survival, and strategy all unfolding right in front of us. It was raw, emotional, and humbling. The true circle of life.
We stayed at Serena Serengeti, which had an unbeatable location for game drives and the perfect mix of comfort and immersion in the wild. If the Great Migration isn’t on your bucket list, it should be. 🌍🦓🦁
Top 3 tips for planning your safari in the Serengeti:
1. ✈️ Pack soft-sided luggage and stay under the weight limit set by your charter — the planes landing in the Serengeti are tiny, and weight restrictions are strict.
2. 📅 Time it right — the migration shifts by month and region. June–August is great for river crossings in the northern Serengeti, while February is calving season in the south.
3. 🔭 Bring binoculars — even with a guide, they make a huge difference for spotting wildlife at a distance.
