The United States is set to leave UNESCO again, according to two European diplomats, as President Donald Trump continues to withdraw from international institutions he has long criticised.

This marks another blow to the Paris-based UN agency, created after World War II to promote peace through global cooperation in education, science, and culture. The New York Post confirmed the move, citing a White House official.

A wave of emotion swept through Cairo’s main train station on Monday as hundreds of Sudanese refugees began their long journey back to Khartoum. After spending months—some over a year—in exile due to the brutal civil war that broke out in April 2023, many are now returning to a homeland still scarred by violence and uncertainty.

The Egyptian government is providing free transport to support the repatriation process. Refugees board a 12-hour train to Aswan, followed by ferries and buses to complete a difficult 2,080-kilometre (1,292-mile) trip back to Sudan. This initiative comes after the Sudanese Armed Forces regained control of Khartoum, which had been under the grip of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for more than a year.

The war, which started as a power struggle between the army and RSF, has turned into one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters—killing over 40,000 people and displacing more than 7 million. Egypt now hosts over 1.5 million Sudanese refugees.

Khartoum remains deeply damaged. Iconic sites like the presidential palace and main airport are in ruins, while basic infrastructure such as electricity and public services are still unreliable. Yet, signs of recovery are emerging, with markets reopening and residents slowly returning.

The emotional toll on those departing was clear. Awatef al Hassan, a mother from Omdurman, expressed joy at reuniting with her children. Journalist Asem al-Taieb described the atmosphere as filled with both sorrow and relief, with many shedding tears of mixed emotions.

A devastating tragedy unfolded in Dhaka on Monday when a Bangladeshi Air Force training fighter jet crashed into a school compound, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens more. The incident, which occurred at Milestone School and College in the capital, is now being described as the deadliest aviation accident in Bangladesh in decades.

The aircraft involved—a Chinese-made F-7 BGI fighter jet—went down shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time (0700 GMT), just as students were being dismissed from class. According to eyewitness accounts, two fighter jets were flying overhead when one suddenly plummeted into the school’s junior playground, triggering a massive explosion.

“It felt like an earthquake,” said Shafiur Rahman Shafi, an 18-year-old student at the school. “There was a loud boom, followed by fire. We were on the senior playground when it happened, and we all ran in panic.”

The crash site quickly became the focus of rescue efforts, with military personnel and emergency responders working to extract victims and provide first aid. An AFP photographer on the scene captured images of injured students being carried away on stretchers, while soldiers helped clear debris from the playground.

A military statement later confirmed that 19 people, including the jet’s pilot, had died in the crash. An additional 20 individuals were reported to be in critical condition. In total, at least 51 people—most of them students—are currently receiving treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka, according to the institute’s director, Mohammad Nasir Uddin.

Scenes at the hospital were harrowing. Grieving families gathered in shock, searching for loved ones. Among them was Tofazzal Hossain, 30, who broke down in tears upon learning that his cousin, a student in eighth grade, had died in the crash. “We frantically searched different hospitals before we found his body,” he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come down with a bout of food poisoning and has been instructed by his doctors to work from home for the next three days.

According to a statement from his office, the 75-year-old leader is recovering at home after being diagnosed with intestinal inflammation caused by spoiled food. As a result, Netanyahu's upcoming court appearances in his ongoing corruption trial have been delayed, with no hearings expected until after the court's summer recess ends in September.

Netanyahu skipped a cabinet meeting on Saturday and was later examined overnight by Professor Alon Hershko at Hadassah-Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem. He is currently receiving intravenous fluids for dehydration.

"In accordance with his doctors’ instructions, the Prime Minister will rest at home for the next three days and will conduct state affairs from there," the statement read. His condition is currently described as "good."

A long-awaited sign of hope is emerging in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group—often accused of receiving support from Rwanda—have signed a key preliminary peace agreement. The deal was brokered in Doha by Qatari mediators and is seen as a breakthrough after years of violent conflict and mass displacement in the region.

The agreement commits both parties to a permanent ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and full respect for DRC’s territorial sovereignty. It explicitly prohibits military attacks, aerial bombings, and territorial advances. Goma, the capital of North Kivu province currently under M23 control, has reacted with cautious optimism.

Local residents like motorcycle taxi driver Fidèle Kasereka and Goma resident Adèle Faida expressed both hope and exhaustion, calling for real, lasting peace rather than temporary truces. Others, like Gu**le Mamlaka, spoke of the deep scars left by years of armed conflict and pleaded for an end to weapons altogether.

The international community—including France and the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO—has praised the agreement as a major step forward but stressed the need for immediate and sincere implementation. Congolese civil society leaders and politicians, such as Grâce Omar, echoed these sentiments, urging that the talks in Doha serve as a gateway to broader political dialogue and long-term peace.

The agreement, effective immediately, includes a monitoring mechanism to ensure compliance. Direct negotiations are scheduled in the coming weeks, aiming for a full peace accord by next summer in line with the June 27 protocol signed by Kinshasa and Kigali.

Kemi Badenoch Sparks Debate with Claim on Nigerian Citizenship Laws

UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has ignited controversy after stating she cannot pass Nigerian citizenship to her children because she is a woman.

In a recent interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Badenoch criticised what she called lenient immigration policies in the UK, arguing that immigrants often take advantage of the system. When asked if Nigerian immigrants should be allowed to form a “mini-Nigeria” in the UK, she firmly replied, “No,” adding that such behaviour wouldn’t be accepted in many countries, including Nigeria.

To illustrate her point, Badenoch claimed, “It’s virtually impossible to get Nigerian citizenship. I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents, but I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman.”

Her comments have since drawn criticism, with legal experts clarifying that her statement is incorrect. Under Section 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution, children born abroad are eligible for Nigerian citizenship by birth if either parent is Nigerian—regardless of gender.

Badenoch, who was born in the UK to Nigerian parents and spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, is known for her strong views on immigration. Married to Scottish banker Hamish Badenoch, she is a mother of three and has indicated that, if she becomes Prime Minister, she would enforce stricter controls on who qualifies for British citizenship.

Her remarks have raised fresh debates on dual nationality, immigration fairness, and gender-based misconceptions in citizenship laws.

A 28-year-old woman, Ayesha Unam Mamfanya, was brutally murdered by her boyfriend in Cape Town, South Africa.

The tragic incident occurred on July 11, 2025, in Gugulethu, according to a statement released by advocacy group Women for Change on Saturday, July 19.

It is alleged that Ayesha was severely beaten by her boyfriend and left unconscious before being dropped off at a day clinic. She was later transferred to a hospital.

“Her family was only informed the following day, when they were told that Ayesha was on life support and in critical condition,” the group said.

She sadly succumbed to her injuries on the same day the assault took place.

Ayesha had reportedly been in a relationship with the suspect for two years and had been living with his family. There are also allegations of ongoing domestic abuse, with neighbours often hearing her screams.

As of now, the boyfriend is still on the run, and no arrests have been made.

“We are heartbroken over the loss of such a beautiful soul. Another sister was murdered. How many more until we declare GBV and femicide a National Disaster?” the group asked.

Zimbabwe qualified for the Rugby World Cup for the first time since 1991 after upsetting Namibia 30-28 in the Africa Cup final on Saturday.

Zimbabwe is the second side from Africa, after world champion South Africa, to secure a berth in the expanded 24-team World Cup in Australia in 2027.

The Sables are also only the third side from Africa to reach the World Cup in the professional era. Namibia has played in the last seven World Cups and remained in qualifying contention as the Africa Cup runner-up.

It will meet the Asia championship runner-up, the United Arab Emirates, next Saturday in Uganda. The winner advances to the final qualification tournament.

Zimbabwe led 30-16 with 20 minutes to go but Namibia scored two tries to close the gap and missed a last-gasp penalty attempt from halfway.

The win was only Zimbabwe's fourth over Namibia in 35 matches.

Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré Abolishes Electoral Commission, Halts Elections 🚫🗳️

President Ibrahim Traoré has dissolved the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), describing it as a costly institution influenced by foreign interests. As a result, all voting activities have been suspended, and the elections initially slated for 2024 have been postponed indefinitely.

Is this a bold move toward national sovereignty—or a troubling shift away from democratic governance?🤔
