The possibilities with data are so great that it is almost GUARANTEED that you're missing some highly valuable opportunities - even when you THINK you're capturing them all.

And as Rob was recently reminded, one of the most actionable ways to DISCOVER those hidden opportunities is to take a fresh listen to your stakeholders. How often do you take the time to just have a friendly and INFORMAL conversation about their reactions and feelings to the deliverables - dashboards or otherwise - that you've delivered so far?

Even if the stakeholder thinks all her needs have been met, if you listen closely to what she says, you might discover opportunities to delight, because stakeholders don't always know what is possible. Sometimes the most valuable requests aren't formulated as requests, but a careful listen can reveal them.

In this short and sweet solo episode, Rob discusses how some of the COOLEST features of his recent hockey dashboards passion project were similarly discovered from informal chats with the stakeholder - at a point when everyone mistakenly thought the most valuable things were already built.

Who doesn't love a good dashboard? Not only can you gain amazing insights that drive business improvement, but a good dashboard gives provides opportunities to learn things you weren't expecting--and that's as fun as it is valuable!

Because the dashboards P3 Adaptive creates are usually for business clients, we don't often get to share them publicly due to their confidential nature. However, Rob Collie recently had the opportunity to give back to his community via a pro bono project for a local Indianapolis organization and we're excited to share the results with you publicly.

In today's Raw Data podcast, Rob Collie sits down with Ryan Spahr , the visionary who co-created the beloved Indy Inline Hockey organization, and they discuss the dashboard stats project that has had Rob buzzing in his free time for weeks (despite it having perhaps THE ugliest data source in history, demonstrating the truly AMAZING POWER of Power BI)!

But don't think for a second that a "fun" project like this doesn't have something to teach us about business data. Some of the themes relevant to business leaders are:

• Line of business software collects data but is terrible at reporting/visualization - no matter what the LOB system is. This is true of Hockeyshift, true of ERP, accounting, etc. software.
• It is so terrible, in fact, that the stakeholders have NO IDEA what is possible with that same data - until they start seeing the art of the possible
• Going "forward from the data" to produce analyses that are "cool" to the consultant is the wrong way, it's so much better to go backwards from what the biz users can do to improve their business day-to-day.
• Overall performance of any operation is actually a blend of many "microtrends" - some positive, some negative - and visuals which surface those trends are super valuable.
• Buy-in and engagement of the "users" of your work is JOB ONE.
