✨ This year’s Met Gala had the theme, the references, and the cultural weight. But where was the magic?

The 2025 Met Gala centered Black dandyism—sharp tailoring, rich references, and a deep sartorial tradition rooted in Black culture. I was ready to be moved. I was ready for the kind of fashion moment that lives in your mind rent-free for years.

And yet… I didn’t see it. I saw gorgeous craftsmanship and flashes of brilliance (Teyana, Jodie, Lauren, Miss Ross), but overall? It felt constrained—boxed in by the political moment we’re in.

I get why that happened. But I’m still disappointed. I wrote about it all in this week’s newsletter.

During Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show, Serena Williams delivered the most satisfying revenge arc I’ve seen in years. Frankly, I don’t care about rappers beefing—but I do care when the women Drake has wronged get their moment to hit back.

At his big age, Drake still can’t stop taking shots at women who’ve long outgrown him. Back in 2022, he tried to clown Serena’s husband as a “groupie.” Now, with Lamar closing the casket, Serena took her victory lap.

Serena’s revenge was a vicarious win for women everywhere who are tired of being the bigger person. Because sometimes, you gotta heel-toe on these [redacteds]. Dance on their metaphorical graves in front of about 130 million people.

Being 35 feels powerful, like I’m finally at the height of my powers. But as I look at young women and teenage girls today, I can’t help but feel the weight of how much more complicated their lives have become. Between the pressures of social media, the pandemic, and global political catastrophes, adolescence has turned into a battlefield where body image, self-worth, and mental health are under constant siege.

As someone who grew up before the age of TikTok and Instagram likes, I can see how much freedom we had compared to the hyper-connected, ultra-distracted world these kids are navigating. I feel for them. Truly. The architects of this mess owe an entire generation an apology.
