Mae Questel stepped onto the Christmas Vacation set carrying nearly sixty years of Hollywood history with her. Long before she played Aunt Bethany, she had charmed the world as the voice of Betty Boop in the 1930s, bringing to life one of animation’s most iconic characters. By the time she joined the Griswold family for their chaotic holiday, she was one of Hollywood’s last living links to the Golden Age of animation. Her presence alone added a layer of magic and nostalgia to the film even if most viewers didn’t realize they were watching a legend.
On set, cast members adored her. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo joked that they couldn’t keep a straight face around her, because Mae delivered every line with a sweet sincerity that was impossible not to love.
