A former member of India’s Parliament convicted of kidnapping has been shot dead on live TV along with his brother while in police custody in the northern city of Prayagraj, raising questions about rule of law in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The gunmen, who appeared to have posed as journalists, fired multiple shots at Atiq Ahmed and former state legislator Ashraf Ahmed on Saturday as they were being taken in handcuffs to hospital by police for a medical checkup, authorities said.

Poland’s government said it will temporarily prohibit grain and other food imports from Ukraine as it seeks to address the rising anger of Polish farmers, who say they are losing huge amounts of money to a glut of Ukrainian grain on the market.

The leader of Poland’s governing party, Jarosław Kaczyński, said that the Polish countryside is facing a “moment of crisis,” and that while Poland supported Ukraine, it was forced to act to protect its farmers.

Ukraine’s military has reported “bloody battles unprecedented in recent decades” in the eastern city of Bakhmut as the death toll from a Russian attack on residential buildings in nearby Sloviansk climbed to 11.

The reported battles on Saturday came as the Russian defence ministry said fighters from its Wagner mercenary group had captured two more areas of Bakhmut.

Russia’s Wagner mercenary group has captured two more areas in Bakhmut, the city where fighting has been concentrated for months, Russia’s Ministry of Defence said.

The death toll rose in a Russian missile strike in another eastern Ukrainian city, Sloviansk. Eleven people are now confirmed dead and 21 wounded. The missiles hit residential buildings on Friday, reducing parts of the apartment blocks to a tangled mess of metal and concrete.

Egypt has confirmed that a group of its soldiers has been captured in Sudan as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has said it would cooperate in returning them.

The RSF, now embroiled in deadly armed conflict with the country’s army for a second day, on Saturday afternoon released a video showing Egyptian troops that it said had “surrendered” themselves in Merowe, located between the Sudanese capital Khartoum and the border with Egypt.

The language reflects the depth of disagreements among the allies on the balance between climate action and energy security, with host Japan leading a pushback against the most ambitious proposals discussed.

After two days of talks in the northern city of Sapporo, the bloc’s climate and environment ministers vowed to “accelerate the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels so as to achieve net zero in energy systems by 2050 at the latest … and call on others to join us in taking the same action”.

KARACHI: Rejecting major objections raised against a multi-billion-rupee controversial project, the Sindh Environmental Protection Tribunal on Saturday allowed the provincial government and other authorities to continue to carry out construction work on Malir Expressway but ordered a monitoring committee to implement over two-dozen conditions set out by it.

The three-member tribunal, headed by retired Justice Nisar Ahmed Shaikh, pronounced its verdict reserved after hearing both sides last month.

KARACHI: Critically ill zoo elephant Noor Jehan made a slight recovery on Saturday when she started eating food on her own while experts continued their efforts late in the evening to help her stand on her feet.

“Today, she has shown signs that have raised our hopes. She used her trunk for the first time in three days and chose to have sugar cane, carrots and melons, while throwing away apples and spinach offered to her,” Dr Shalla Hayat, part of the Four Paws’ team assisting the zoo staff in Noor Jehan’s treatment said.
