Soldier shot dead by police inspector in Bauchi over illegal mining truck

A soldier of the Nigerian Army has been shot dead by a mobile police inspector while intercepting a truck suspected to be conveying solid minerals from an illegal mining site in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Zagazola Makama learnt that the incident occurred on Aug. 25 at about 7:50 p.m. when troops of 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, stopped a truck with registration number Gombe 676 BLG at a checkpoint in Futuk village.

The truck driver was said to have refused to halt at the checkpoint, forcing the Guard Commander, Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Ali Haruna, to pursue the vehicle with his men on motorbikes until they intercepted it.

However, on halting the truck, a mobile police officer identified as Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim allegedly disembarked and opened fire on the Guard Commander, hitting him in the stomach.

The soldiers immediately overpowered the policeman and disarmed him, while the injured officer was rushed to the Gombe Specialist Hospital for urgent medical treatment. He later died from the gunshot wound.

Sources further disclosed that the truck driver escaped from the scene in the chaos that followed the shooting.

Preliminary findings revealed that the truck was conveying solid minerals suspected to have been extracted illegally from Yalo community, also in Alkaleri LGA. The police inspector was believed to have been on illegal es**rt duty for the truck.

“The reasons behind the refusal of the vehicle to stop at the checkpoint, the decision of a trained police officer to open fire on soldiers after interception, and the escape of the driver remain highly suspicious. Investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances behind the incident,” the sources stated.

The sources added that the involvement of security personnel in illegal mining operations remained a disturbing trend, stressing that the incident spotlight the need for urgent and independent investigations to address compromises within the security system.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police has interfaced with the Commander, 33 Artillery Brigade, Brig.-Gen. U.J. Simon, to calm tensions and ensure proper handling of the case.

Zagazola learnt that the remains of the slain officer have been deposited at the hospital morgue while arrangements are ongoing for his burial in line with military tradition.

The suspect, Inspector Ibrahim, is currently in army custody, while the intercepted truck has been impounded for further investigation.

FCD Vista Scouting Programme Set for Lagos, Uyo, Abuja.

The 2025 edition of the FCD Vista Scouting Programme will hold later this month across three major Nigerian cities Lagos, Uyo and Abuja organisers have announced.

The initiative, which targets players born in 2008, 2009 and 2010, is aimed at giving promising youngsters the platform to showcase their skills before international scouts, with the prospect of combining football with education abroad.

According to the FCD Africa Representative and Head of Recruitment for Africa, Paul Ojo Omamomo, the programme has consistently created pathways for talented footballers to secure professional contracts in Europe and beyond.

“Over the years, the scouting programme has opened doors for several Nigerian players who are now plying their trade across top leagues. We believe this year’s edition will unearth the next set of stars ready to take their football careers to greater heights,” Omamomo said.

Some of the programme’s graduates currently making waves in foreign leagues include Samson Tijani (Dukla Praha, Czech Republic), Izuchukwu Okonkwo (Slavia Prague, Czech Republic), Osuji Vince (Club Brugge, Belgium), Ehije Ukaki (Sheffield United, England), Samuel Akere (Widzew Łódź, Poland), Jonathan Okoronkwo (Hatayspor, Turkey), Olakunle Olusegun (FC Krasnodar, Russia), Umeh Emmanuel (FC Zurich, Switzerland), and Sunusi Ibrahim (CF Montreal, USA) among others.

Organisers noted that beyond football, the scouting exercise also provides opportunities for successful players to further their education abroad, particularly in Russia, making it a life-changing experience for participants.

With a long list of graduates already established in Europe and North America, the organisers believe this year’s edition could produce Nigeria’s next big export to world football.

SS2 Gothia Cup Winning Goalkeeper Eyes Golden Eaglets

Having won the Gothia Cup with SKF Nigerian Eagles last month in Sweden, Anis Onyekachukwu Onyemaechi has set his target on working hard to make the Golden Eaglets team that will represent Nigeria at the WAFU B U17 tournament next month.

The 15 - year old, SS 2 student of Chrisland High School, Ikeja in Lagos, a product od Unique Soccer Academy, Lagos, has shown flashes of brilliance in some training sessions in the Golden Eaglets, as he continues his quest to convince the coaching crew to make the team.

At the Gothia Cup, Onyemaechi was very exceptional, where he helped SKF Nigerian Eagles to win nine matches enroute the podium finish to become champions of the tournament at the U16 category.

After arriving in Nigeria from Sweden, he continued his goalkeeping exploits with Chrisland School Football Team at the DOA football annual tournament, where his school signed out as champions.

With the qualities Onyemaechi has shown in between the sticks, there is no doubt that the teenage goalkeeper, who has demonstrated strenght of character and strong agility, has a bright future in the beautiful game, if he remains steadfast.

How Public Officers Make Fraudulent Anticipatory Declaration of Assets- Olukoyede

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr, Ola Olukoyede has disclosed that many public officers are now perfecting the antics of anticipatory declaration of assets to justify their intended stealing of public funds and other acts of corruption.

He stated this in Abuja on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 delivering a goodwill message at the launch of the Virtual Tool on the Code of Conduct for Public Officers organized by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB in collaboration with the Technical Unit on Good Governance and Anti-corruption Reforms, TUGAR.

Explaining how anticipatory asset declaration is done, he disclosed that, “there is an investigation we carried out and we discovered something not too strange that proves how criminally smart some of our politically exposed persons carry out some of the various activities we investigate them for. I asked my boys to get the CCB form because there is something we were not clear about and we discovered one of the very big properties valued over N3billion that the person declared in the CCB form carried an address different from the address of the location of the property. I felt something was awry here, we decided to dig further and after more interrogation, we discovered that the person declared the property when the property was not in existence” .

He urged the leadership of CCB to take note of such criminality and intensify investigation through innovative ways to curtail corruption,

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi pointed out that the bedrock of public service is adherence to standards and ethics of service. He applauded the virtual tool designed by the CCB as a significant milestone in the digitization and technological investigation of public conduct, stating that it will promote preventive compliance and awareness. He enjoined public servants to embrace the new tool for enhanced conduct in public service.

The Head of Service, Mrs Didi Esther Walson- Jack stressed that, “We must leverage on technology to solve problems. It is faster, smarter and more transparent. Without conduct and ethics no reform will last. Ethical governance is not optional. The benefit of this tool is that it is accessible, easy to use, cost effective and promotes transparency that enables tracking and compliance”.

In his Opening Speech, Chairman of Code of Conduct Bureau, Abdullahi Usman Bello explained that the tool will make public officers to be accountable and easy to use.

“The tool will ensure that public servants carry out their duties in high esteem and educate them on the step to step rules and regulations that guides them” , he said.

“The treatment of Ms. Comfort Emmanson by Ibom Air was reckless and violated her right to dignity of human person”

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) strongly condemns the treatment of Ms. Comfort Emmanson in the incident aboard an Ibom Air flight on 10 August 2025 and the subsequent lifetime flight ban imposed on her by Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON). These actions are heavy-handed, unlawful, and a grave affront to the rule of law and human dignity.

It is deeply disturbing that Ms. Emmanson was forcibly removed from the aircraft, stripped of her clothing in public, and subjected to humiliation that was filmed and circulated online. Such conduct is degrading, violates her right to dignity and privacy, and falls far short of the standards of civility and professionalism expected in the aviation sector. No person, regardless of the circumstances, should be treated in such a dehumanising manner.

While Ibom Air has issued its own account of events, other video footage has emerged showing an Ibom Air hostess preventing Ms. Emmanson from alighting from the aircraft, a conduct that could constitute false imprisonment and a possible provocation that escalated the situation. This makes it all the more critical that the matter be subjected to an independent, impartial investigation by the appropriate authorities before any disciplinary action is taken against her.

The decision to impose a lifetime ban without affording Ms. Emmanson a fair opportunity to be heard is equally troubling. Ibom Air has so far only presented its own version of events without giving her the chance to respond. This one-sided process, culminating in a ban supported by AON, breaches the fundamental principle of fair hearing and renders the decision legally and morally indefensible. The power to suspend or restrict a passenger’s right to fly rests with the appropriate statutory regulator, not private associations or airline operators acting unilaterally.

The photographing, dissemination, and online circulation of indecent images of Ms. Emmanson is also an egregious invasion of privacy and a criminal act. Even if the incident was to be reported, the footage should have been blurred or edited in such a way that it did not expose her nudity to the public. Those responsible for capturing and distributing the unedited footage must be identified and prosecuted. Such acts erode public trust and undermine the rights of all citizens to be treated with dignity and respect.

The NBA demands that Ibom Air immediately withdraw the lifetime ban, issue a public apology to Ms. Emmanson, and cooperate fully with an impartial investigation into this incident. We also call on the Minister for Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough inquiry, sanction all those found culpable, and enforce strict compliance with established standards for the humane treatment of air passengers.

The NBA stands ready to provide Ms. Emmanson with pro bono legal support to ensure her rights are protected and that she obtains redress for the violations suffered. We will not remain silent while the fundamental rights of any Nigerian are trampled upon, whether by public authorities, private corporations, or individuals. Respect for human dignity and the rule of law must never be compromised, and in this matter, justice must prevail.
