🎙 I was having trouble thinking of a topic for today and it landed somewhere between ‘your side hustle’ and ‘balance.’ ⚖️
Freelancing being my little side hustle is cool. Because it actually makes a bit of money. I haven’t had a shortage of small gigs- which is great. I don’t do any advertising, except for my brothers running their mouths about me. Probably half of my jobs come from them. ✨Thank you✨ and that’s been great. I, however, do not make enough money to live off of this way. If I advertised and hustled, I MAYBE could. It’s would be quite a bit of work. (Hence HUSTLE) Anyways, this is why I’m interested in a 9-5.
I have a set rate, set hours, and I don’t have to worry about the bills 💵... I’m not saying 9-5s are easy, but you know what’s expected of you when you walk into an already established company. And you, for the most part, know what you could get out of it. That is not the case when starting your own business. You can’t guarantee that it will be profitable, and most small businesses take a loss their first couple years. So, when is it worth it to try? When you are financially stable enough that ALL could backfire and you wouldn’t be homeless or the bill you had to miss didn’t leave you without water? I’m not sure what the answer is, but if you want it [bad] that’s half the battle. And for me that’s not the case.
I want the 9-5 life. I do some freelance on the side to make some pocket cash. The question is: where will this podcast land on my taxes? Is this a hobby or a hustle? Initially it was a passion project for my portfolio. A quick thing to design for. But it’s purpose was sincere, and the audience was very clear- IS very clear: 👯♀️ young art students. Teenagers that are interested in graphic design or that don’t know that it has opportunity for careers. Every bit of information I had the opportunity to share was, from the heart, important to me to share with the audience about design and life designing. But my balance is off. Big time.
When you graduate before your friends, you have all this time to burn up. 🔥 You don’t have homework anymore and they do. So, what do you do? Grind on your podcast and hustle on your freelance until you get a job. Duh! (Obviously it’s whatever you want, but ideally it improves you as a human in someway because it’s cool to be productive. Wether it’s self care or educational etc.) I just started an internship.
I’m two weeks in and what I’m learning is I don’t have time to record this podcast anymore. Or maybe it’s that I am out of information to share that I feel strongly about. And thats okay. I won’t be canceling the podcast just yet. But, for the rest of the year- unless a grow a serious following- I will only be sharing a podcast if I come across some information that I can’t keep to myself. This might be a guess speaker to talk about photography or a personal finance manager- or my option on a modern artist... 👩🎨 either way- if I were to continue forcing episodes out, I would start making content I didn’t like. And it would show the lack of balance in my life.
So, regardless of what you’re doing, I hope you’re doing it because you like it. And not because you feel obligated to, or because it is the thing to do.
Keep hustling, if you don’t have a job. Keep working, if you’ve got a job. And, for the love, share this podcast with some art students!
Have a great rest of your week. Follow, comment, share!!
