In this episode of Foxtrot Adventures, Mike and I take on the misogi challenge of backpacking the Appalachian Trail's 100-Mile Wilderness, a remote and rugged section in Maine known for its isolation and tough terrain. This stretch is one of the longest and most secluded on the entire trail, offering a true backcountry experience. Hikers tackling this section must be prepared for steep ascents, muddy patches, and occasional stream crossings. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including moose, black bears, and numerous bird species.
At the end of this 100-mile journey stands Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and the highest peak in Maine, rising to 5,267 feet (1,605 meters). The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness and marks a major milestone for hikers who complete the entire trail. The final ascent to the top is demanding, with steep, rocky paths and exposed ridgelines, making the summit a dramatic and rewarding conclusion to the trek.
This accomplishment was more than just a physical challenge—it pushed us to our limits, forced us to face the unknown, and allowed us to embrace the transformative journey along the way. The reward is ours, as well as to those who came before us and those who will follow. See you on the trail.
