One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in .official . Such a beautiful location. So still and serene. Only the creak of the oars in the passing boats. The river gliding by, smoothing the rocks as it goes. The staff so courteous and helpful when needed and invisible when not. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere quite so welcoming. Just a totally unique experience.

Empire State Building ticket from 1988. Dusk is the best time to go up in our opinion. Day turns to night and Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs, bridges and tower blocks come alive with electricity. New York is a great city. It is two years since we sailed there. Everyone should visit it at least once. We’ve been over 20 times. In most recent years we’ve always taken at least one specialist pocket map with us. Always find something new in them. We are just reading the great Yorkshire writer Keith Waterhouse on his first visit to Manhattan in his second memoir Streets Ahead. Beautiful writing. It’s a city that inspires creativity from residents and visitors alike. Our first visit was to interview Sonic Youth many years ago but we also ran into and . This ticket is a momento of that trip. Our voyage there by sea will appear in issue one of next year.

Berlin based music man and uniform collector .mfs in his element in a backstreet uniform store in Gdansk, during our trip there with him. A close associate of Joy Division he ran Factory Records Germany and is a must seek out guide for whatever is happening in Berlin’s counter culture. He now makes his own music in Berlin, remixes and produced others and also manages young Chinese band Stolen, who supported on their last European tour. There will be an interview with Mark about his travels in China and journeys into the old Soviet Block in Chinook issue 1 next year. Check out his insta for links to his current music.

The leafy kids playground dedicated to Beastie Boy Adam ‘MCA’ who grew up in the surrounding streets. Sometimes travel is about remembering the beauty of a person and not just a location. Yauch was a clever, inquisitive, funny, caring, inspiring and lovely person who we had known since 1986. The day we visited the playground, in November 2018, there were kids sliding down the slide into a huge pile of leaves. Adam would have liked that. Look it up, go and visit and never forget his impact on the world.

Idyllic English beach cottage on Winchelsea Beach, England. Amidst a row of tiny beach huts that are increasingly being knocked down and re-emerging as award winning latch clad architectural visions some retain their original charm and status. Winchelsea Beach is a beautiful, almost secret location, looking towards France near the ancient town of Rye. Both and have worked recording and making videos here. The setting sun over the dunes at Camber Sands, England. When the beach is empty it looks like the Hamptons and is a popular location for feature films, television programmes and commercials but come the heatwaves come the people and the sands fill up with all the cultural diversity of nearby London. The enclave of tiny sandy cul de sacs behind the beach know as Camber Dunes has an ongoing wave of gentrification where rare cedar clad architecturally designed modernist houses are replacing old vinyl window framed pebble dashed bungalows and retirement homes. Ramshackle beach houses that sat for sale for years are now redeveloped into seven figure productions that resemble the architectural portfolio of nearby Dungeness. What isn’t regenerating is the natural beauty of the area, where marsh and shingle bank meet acres of soft sand and the English Channel. Stand on the beach at dusk and you can see thunderstorms over France. It’s a simple but stunning holiday destination that rightly attracts all. If you want to stay or eat check out

We love our friend .dalton’s brilliant travel photographs. They are all for sale at frankdalton.com. The young Irish photographer makes it hard to decide whether it’s the people or the places he shoots that make them look so fascinating and inviting. Plenty of fantastic travel photographers make you marvel at that blacktop disappearing into the mountains but Frank manages to vividly portray the humanity of a place. Check out his website for his images of India and Ireland and his two accounts .dalton He took this on Gili Air in Bali on his final morning there. “I loved it, there are no motor vehicles there, just horses, bicycles and carts.”
