Birds depicted in tarot can fall into two categories, single identifiable birds and unidentifiable flocks of birds. In a general sense, they both represent mental and physical freedom.
Each identifiable bird has its own message to pass on, take for example the Ibis in the Star card.
Thoth, the god of science, literature, wisdom, invention, magic writing, astronomy, and much more is depicted with the head of an Ibis. As we see, the Ibis is perched in a tree on a lush mountain behind the main character, visiting with the ancient knowledge of the Universe. (Check my post on mountains in tarot)
If we look at the meaning of the Star card, it represents feeling inspired, a renewed faith and a knowing that the universe has your back.
Imagine how comforting it must be to have the wisdom of the universe sung to you. Now we see why she is inspired, has new faith, and a sense of security moving forward.
The flocks of birds we see depicted in the tarot are unidentifiable and represent a state in which something is moving.
So how would I consider identifying their message?
Are they flying towards the character bringing a message, or are they flying away indicating you have already received the message?
Are there plenty of birds, or just a few indicating how big, or meaningful the message may be?
Are they perched or in motion, the state of which the message may be in?
I’ll speak of other specific birds in future posts, until then I hope this has been helpful in interpreting what birds represent in your reading.
